SUPERSTAR VIRGO: cruise guide for First-Timers (What to Expect)

Recently, we have been invited by star Cruises to experience sailing from Manila to Ilocos to Taiwan to Hong Kong aboard Superstar Virgo. This wasn’t our first time cruising, so we were a bit much more confident this time around. On our first time a few years back, we were so intimidated by the whole cruise thing. You see, we’re used to backpacking so anything that resembles luxury feels alien to us. preparing for it alone was unnerving. What do I pack? What ought to I wear? What travel files do I need? how expensive is it gonna be? are there hidden charges? how do I disembark?

This post is brought to you by star Cruises. If you’re sailing aboard Superstar Virgo soon and it’s your first time to cruise, this post is for you. This also applies to other routes of the Virgo. I hope this short article be able to prepare you for this new, marvelous, and extremely unwinding experience! here are 10 things you can expect.

Packing & Pre-Trip Preparations

First things first, travel documents. If you’re joining the Manila-Laoag-Kaohsiung-Hong Kong cruise, no visas needed. You only need to bring your passport and a photocopy of its bio page.

It’s a cruise so it wouldn’t hurt to dress up and achieve your #OOTD goals. We packed at least 2 sets of clothes a day: one set of light clothes for touring, and another for the evening shows. Why two sets? It’s pretty amazing inside the ship, but things change as soon as you get out of it. In our case, it’s the middle of April! Onboard, I’m clad in shorts and a t-shirt with a polo on top of it. but as soon as we go outside, I had to remove the polo because it would get too hot especially on Ilocos and Kaohsiung stops. Hong Kong was a different story. It rained so hard for a brief moment. Takeaway: check the weather in every stop and prepare accordingly.

The rooms are also equipped with slip-on sandals, bath robes, and toiletries. You will also be offered a see-through plastic pouch wherein you can put your passport and access card (which I will discuss later).

Remember: Each passenger is allowed only one piece of check-in luggage free-of-charge. Anything much more will incur additional fees.

For the Manila season, the default currency is the Hong Kong dollar (HKD).

Boarding

Superstar Virgo in Manila

In numerous ways, the process is similar to that at the airport. You still need valid travel documents, check in your baggage, and pass through an immigration inspection and safety and security checks before boarding.

You will be given a mag card (access card). DO NOT lose IT. It’s the most essential item as soon as you step into the ship. It serves as your keycard to your cabin and credit report card when purchasing something or dining at specialty restaurants. You will also need this when disembarking to explore the ports and when returning to the ship.

You will need to surrender your passport upon boarding. You’ll have it back after the journey.

Safety Drill

As soon as everyone is settled, there will be a safety drill that you are required to participate in. It is incredibly essential that you are familiar with the ship’s geography and the directions you need to take in case of an emergency.

Safety Drill
Manila Bay Sunset
In Manila, the drill happens best before sunset, so as soon as it’s over, head straight to Deck 12 to have a better view. We’ve been to a lot of places around the world, but Manila provides some of the most spectacular sunsets.

Do it at every stop. nothing is much more unwinding that just viewing the sun call it a day.

3 Inclusive Restaurants

“Inclusive,” implying you can dine here free-of-charge. It’s part of what you paid for. Onboard the Virgo, there are three inclusive dining options:

Mediterranean Buffet. the most popular, located on Deck 12, just behind the Parthenon Pool. serves breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, and supper. No reservations needed.

Genting Palace. Western and Chinese cuisines. serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This is also where the Gala dinner takes place. Although it is inclusive, reservation is required.

The pavilion Room. Family-style restaurant. In my opinion, of the three, this is the best. serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Reservations required.

Both Genting palace and the pavilion offer full-course meals (appetizer, soup, main course, dessert). drinks will be charged to your room.

Prawns on Angel Hair Pasta at the Genting Palace
Salmon and Hamachi Sashimi at Samurai
Aside from these, there are specialty dining options! There’s the Taj providing Indian favorites, and Samurai serving delectable Japanese cuisine. Samurai have us our best gastronomic experience onboard. From the salmon and yellowtail (hamachi) sashimi as appetizer to teppanyaki as main course and matcha ice cream as dessert, that meal was scrumptious from start to finish.

Shore Excursions (Shorex)

This is the part where you can get off the ship and explore the city where it is docked.

In our case, it has three stops: Laoag, Kaohsiung, and Hong Kong. At every stop, they offer various pre-arranged trips called Shorex (shore excursions). For example, in Laoag, you have a choice among Laoag City Tour, Paoay Sand Dunes, Vigan Heritage Tour, and a couple more.

Other routes will have their own shorex offers, of course.

Hong Kong Island Skyline
You can book a pre-arranged trip or do it on your own (DIY). It’s completely up to you.

If you book a shorex, you will be joining the rest of the cruise passengers who booked that tour. The terrific thing about it is that you have everything taken care of for you. You will have a trip guide and a few members of the crew will join the group. They will make sure you’re back at the port in time for sailing. meals are also typically included.

If you pull a DIY, you have complete control of your time and it’s going to be cheaper. However, make sure you’re back by the prescribed time because the ship will NOT wait for you.

Either way, you will be given a small sheet of paper upon disembarkation. read IT, understand IT, keep IT. It will tell you what time you have to be back. It changes per stop. The boarding deadline in Taiwan is different from that in Hong Kong.

Room and Amenities

Balcony Room
There are four types of accommodations onboard, from the most affordable to the fanciest: inside Room, ocean view Room, Balcony Room, and Suite. On our first time, we stayed in an inside Room; this time in a Balcony Room. In both occasions, the room was always frequently maintained, with multiple cleanups within the day. complimentary bottles of water also replenish every day.

If you have enough budget for an inside Room, opt for it. Don’t drop the idea of cruising just because you can’t afford the best rooms. In my experience, we spent many of our time outside the room — going on shore excursions, pigging out at the restaurants, and exploring other amenities.

Speaking of amenities, here are some that you can delight in for FREE:

जिम। We packed gym clothes but we failed to use them because we would already average 15,000 steps per day just by joining the shore excursions.

Pool. located on Deck 12.

Casino. In case you’re interested. Deck 7.

Parthenon Pool
Duty totally free onboard
There’s also responsibility totally free shops on Decks 7 and 8, and a small store selling chips, chocolates, and biscuits (including Filipino products) on Deck 12 just next to the bar.

Spend your evenings viewing a show at the Lido Theater. some of these performances can be delighted in for free, while others incur additional charges, including the for-adults-only show.

Gala night and Dinner

Happens on the fifth night. It’s an event that begins with a cocktail party at the Grand Piazza on Deck 7, where the captain introduces the senior members of the crew. There are also musical performances. overflowing wine! मन पर्यो!

The captain introducing the senior members of the team.
Gala dinner at Genting Palace
At around 6pm, delight in a full-course dinner at the Genting palace as a pianist serenades you with the unlimited ocean in the background.

If you intend to join this, make sure you’re dressed for the occasion. dress Code: stylish Casual. No shorts and no open toed footwear. For guys, prepare a collared t-shirt or blazer.

Wifi

We know how essential it is to you so we created a separate section for it.

Every passenger is given 1-hour complimentary Internet access. If you need more, you’re gonna have to purchase a plan.

24 hrs: HKS 116

24 hrs (Social plan): HKD 54

Whole Cruise: HKD 505

Remember: you’re in the middle of the ocean, sharing the connection with the rest of the ship, so don’t expect lightning speeds, but it’s good enough for browsing, checking emails, social media, and even viewing YouTube videos.

Staff

Filipina working at Samurai
What we love the most about the Superstar Virgo is that it feels like home because of the staff. There are a lot of Filipinos working onboard: from the reception to the restaurants to the room services. I’m pretty sure there are much more in the non-guest-facing departments, too. and it’s always fantastic to get to talk with them. They are happy of their work!

The rest of the crew is warm, friendly, and always prepared to help. You don’t even need to ask for assistance. If they see you looking like you need something (info, direction, whatever), they will be the first to method you with a smile.

Checking Out

On the day before you arrive in Manila, you will be requested to proceed to Deck 12 for a health check. You will just be filling out a form and pass by a thermal imager.

PAHIYAS celebration ON A BUDGET: travel guide & itinerary

The very first thing I stated to myself when I stepped in the town of Lucban was “OMG, I belong.” I’ve always liked anything bright as well as vibrant. It’s like if I die as well as I get reincarnated into a Philippine Festival, I’d most likely be Pahiyas. (Not that celebrations are living things. however you get the point.)

The Pahiyas celebration is celebrated every may 15 in Lucban, Quezon, in honor of the municipality’s customer saint, San Isidro Labrador (St. Isidore the Farmer). It’s the locals’ method of providing thanks for the bountiful gather over the past year. After an early morning mass at Lucban Church, a parade goes around town, passing by homes that are decorated with vegetables, fruits, handicrafts, as well as kiping, leaf-shaped paper-like decors made of rice. The grander, the better. The more vibrant the home is, the more people it attracts.

If Pahiyas is your type of celebration too, make sure that you’re well-prepared for a visit.

How to get to Lucban, Quezon

Lucban is a second-class municipality in Quezon bordering Tayabas to the south, Sampaloc to the north, as well as the province of Laguna to the east. It is in close proximity to a number of cities where transportation choices are plenty including Lucena as well as Tayabas in Quezon, as well as Calamba as well as Sta. Cruz in Laguna.

By Public Transportation.

There are a number of choices to reach Lucban from Manila. There are vans, buses or jeeps in most of the close-by cities, however this is the path that I have tried: via Lucena City.

1. From Cubao, EDSA-Kamuning, or EDSA-Buendia, take a bus to Lucena City (Fare: P225, travel time: 4-5 hours).

2. At the Lucena Grand Terminal, trip a jeepney to Lucban (Fare: P30, travel time: 30-45 minutes).

By personal Car

1. Take the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX).

2. Take Calamba or Sto. Tomas exit. If you exit in Calamba, you’ll be passing with numerous towns in Laguna (Los Banos, Bay, Pila, Sta. Cruz, Pagsanjan, Cavinti, Luisiana) up until you reach Lucban. travel time: 2.5-3 hours.

If you take Sto. Tomas, you’ll be passing with Alaminos as well as San Pablo in Laguna, as well as Tiaong, Candelaria, as well as Sariaya in Quezon. When you reach Tayabas, comply with the Tayabas-Lucban Road. travel time: 3.5-4 hours.

You can discover auto parking areas outside of the parade path (and outside the town proper). You may walk or take the tricycle to go around.

Remember: you’re going to a fiesta. as well as just like any type of fiesta in the Philippines, web traffic is expected. Whether you’re taking public or personal transportation, the key is to leave as early as possible so you show up in Lucban just in time for the 6am mass, which signals the begin of the parade.

What to perform in Lucban

The government of Lucban usually has prepared a number of activities lined up for the occasion. It’s always finest to get a hold of the listing of activities particularly if you’re planning on staying in the next days. however if you’re staying for just a day (May 15), here’s what you can do.

Pahiyas Festival
Pahiyas Festival

Attend the 6am Mass. This signals the begin of the parade. however take the time to notice the church. officially named San Luis Obispo de Tolosa Parish Church, this Lucban church is really its third version. The very first was developed in 1595 however was ruined in 1629. The second building was built from 1630 to 1640 however was destroyed in a terminate in 1733. The present church was completed in 1738.

Follow the parade. The parade begins after the very first mass. It goes around town, passing by the embellished homes participating in the Timpalak Pahiyas. If that’s as well congested for you, you can roam on your own, take photos, as well as converse with locals.

Visit Kamay ni Hesus Healing Church, a relaxed place, perfect for Catholic pilgrims who want a moment of tranquility. warning though: on this day, even this area can get overcrowded. Also, if you wanna see the entire place, prepare for an uphill battle. It’s found outside the town appropriate so you may want to take a tricycle to get here.

Food trip! There is street food everywhere! You’ll discover kiosks selling pancit habhab (a noodle meal served on banana leaves or plastic bags as well as eaten without utensils), longganisang lucban (local sausages), as well as pilipit (a type of fried dough confectionery similar to donuts however twisted).

Speaking of food….

Where to eat in Lucban

Lucban’s tourist map is dotted with a few restaurants offering regional dishes. right here are a few of them.

Mustiola’s

Mustiola’s (San Luis Street). A turo-turo/carinderia-style restaurant set in an ancestral house. Specialty: Sinantomas (a meat stewsimilar to kaldereta), halo-halo.

Cafe San Luis (San Luis Street). An al-fresco-type eatery. Specialty: Inalamangan, similar to binagoongan however with added turmeric.

Old center Panciteria (San Luis Street). Specialty: Pancit Habhab.

Dealo Koffee Klatch (Quezon Avenue). Speciality: desserts.

Abcede’s Resto (Quezon Avenue). Specialty: longganisa burger.

Word of caution: you may want to prevent eating during peak hours (11am-1pm) since you’ll be sharing the restaurants with the rest of the tourists. If you’re allergic to waiting times that feel like forever, take an early or late lunch.

कहाँ बस्ने

The town’s tourism surges during Pahiyas however isn’t extremely active for the rest of the year. Hence, lodging choices in Lucban are extremely limited, to state the least.

Batis Aramin resort as well as Hotel. the most widely known location to stay in Lucban. Lying just opposite Kamay ni Hesus, this resort-slash-nature-park is only 5-10 minutes from the town center. inspect rates here: Batis Aramin.

Other locations to stay are in Lucban:

Orena’s Inn hotel as well as resort

Manasa farm as well as spring resort

Many opt with a resort outside Lucban. That’s okay too. as well as you may be thinking about of going to Pagbilao-Padre Burgos to go island-hopping, see Borawan beach as well as Dampalitan Island, as well as perhaps spend the night there. let me tell you as early as now: DON’T. These islands are congested even on routine summertime days. Going right here on the exact same day of Pahiyas will double the numbers. You most likely won’t enjoy it. look elsewhere. right here are other options:

Liliw as well as Majayjay, Laguna. There are little mountain resorts by the river.

San Pablo City, Laguna. Pig out as well as see the seven Lakes while you’re there.

Cagbalete Island, Quezon. beach bum!

Or just stay in close-by Tayabas City.

Nawawalang Paraiso Resort. Brgy. Camaysa, Tayabas. (042) 793-3437. P2900 per space (2-6 pax).

Kamayan sa Palaisdaan Hotel. Brgy. Dapdap, Tayabas. (042)793-3654.

Mi Casa en Tayabas. 73 M. Ponce Street. (042) 793-2660/

The great thing about staying in Tayabas is you likewise get to see as well as check out this historic city. Some locations of interest:

Puente de Malagonlong (Malagonlong Bridge), a 445-ft stone arch bridge built during the Spanish age as well as is one of the oldest Spanish bridges in the country.

San Miguel de Archangel Basilica Menor (Tayabas Basilica), the center of the Catholic belief in the city, developed in 1600.

Tokyo: top 10 suggested Hostels

hotels may be typically costly in Tokyo, however hostels offer a much less expensive alternate to the budget-conscious backpacker. as well as there are a great deal of them in the Japanese capital.

While you won’t discover bed rates that are as low as those in Southeast Asia, these hostels as well as inns can go even under USD 20 per night. Unlike in other cities where hostels seem to be concentrated in just one district, they are scattered all throughout the metropolis, which makes choosing the best one a much much more challenging decision. To assist you with that, I strongly desire you to checked out this publish first: Where to stay in Tokyo.

And, that’s the begin of the long history of business that specialize in silicon transistors in Silicon Valley.

5. Incubator

Silicon Valley was not the birthplace of the transistor, the computer, the smartphone, or the robot, however it was the incubator for businesses, as well as being more advancement than research study in “research as well as development,” a “factory of innovation.”

19 books I’VE recently read THAT YOU should read too

Posted: 8/16/21 | August 16th, 2021

One of the things I did a lot of this past year was read. (I mean for a while there wasn’t much to do anyway). When I finally hit the road, I read just as much. Buses, ferries, trains — they’re all perfect places to read a book. happy hour at some random bar in a random city? another great opportunity to read! give me a glass of wine and a book and I’m a happy camper.

Since it’s been a while since I last give a list of some of my favorite books, I’d thought I’d share what I’ve read this year that I really loved. (If you want regular updates, we have a monthly book club that you can join, with even more suggestions!)

1. Take more Vacations, by Scott Keyes

2. Circe, by Madeline Miller

This novel follows the fictionalized life of the Greek goddess Circe. It is a well-written page-turner that spans Greek history. 4. Land of love and Drowning, by Tiphanie Yanique

Set in the us Virgin Islands and taking place through most of the 20th century, this book uses the author’s own family history as well as island history to tell a story that features a lot of magical realism. It took me a few pages to get into it, but it really picks up after the first 20-30 pages. It’s a vibrant, layered read, and I can see why the author won so many awards for it.

5. Breath, by James Nestor

Breath is about how we breathe and how we can improve the quality of our breathing. The book argues that proper breathing can literally solve pretty much all of our health problems. While I think that’s a bit of an exaggeration, there’s still a lot of good information in here on how improving your breathing can reduce allergies (something I struggle with), increase energy, and reduce sleep apnea and snoring.

KALANGGAMAN ISLAND travel guide & Itinerary: how to get There

The whole vessel was brimming with enthusiasm as the boatmen prepared to land us on Kalanggaman Island.

The morning travel was uneventful: there was a small issue for rain, but thankfully the rainclouds never left the mainland. My companions, groggy the whole trip, were now back to their festive selves, barely hiding their excitement as the island got close. By the time the boat touched silt, everyone’s as giddy as a tuba drinking session.

Please understand the eagerness; we were first-timers to Kalanggaman, Leyte’s virgin paradise and one of the Philippines’ top beach destinations. I would’ve said it’s Leyte’s best-kept secret, but the island is currently enjoying a healthy dose of attention from bloggers, travel writers, and the mainstream media.

Understanding Kalanggaman Island

This post is brought to you by Cebu Pacific Air. Kalanggaman Island is within Palompon, a municipality west of Ormoc City. Kalanggaman didn’t all of a sudden rise out of the seabed to challenge the Panglaos and Calaguases among the Philippines’ beach elite. It has always been here, of course, this remote treasure located some twenty kilometers west of Leyte. but the recent surge in interest can be credited in part to the local government’s efforts to promote the island, in line with the province’s renewed emphasis on tourism.

I’m sure by now you’ve read the numerous accounts of visitors gushing over Kalanggaman’s peaceful beauty. let me just add that the island, in all its secluded glory, is the ideal trip for the introverts and the reserved. only a hint of Leyte and Cebu can be seen on the horizon. Those with castaway fantasies (and melodramatic tendencies) would certainly appreciate the isolation.

Now before you ball up your swimsuits, you ought to know that Kalanggaman is no glamping destination. basic comforts in the island are, well, pretty basic, with only a handful of changing rooms and toilets. In terms of amenities, there are a few cottages here and there, a small multi-purpose hall, and maybe a treehouse or two. That’s it. Overall, infrastructure in the island is still down to the bare essentials.

Keep in mind that all boats leave the island before sunset, and won’t return until the next day. If you’re staying for the night, make sure you’ve made your pick-up times clear to the boatman.

How to get to Kalanggaman Island

That said, access to Kalanggaman is still limited. To maintain the island’s delicate nature, only a certain number of people can visit the island every day. This gives this trip a sense of exclusivity. When you arrive at Kalanggaman, you acquire a feeling that somehow you now belong to a very select club.

So how do you get admitted to this club? The short answer is, to get to Kalanggaman, you need patience. For something a bit much more detailed, here are the essential steps we took for the trip.

Cebu Pacific Air flies to Ormoc from Cebu. The flight is operated by Cebgo.

Fly to Ormoc City. The city of Ormoc is the gateway to western Leyte, and flying is the most convenient way to get there. The city has its own domestic airport, though flights to or from Manila are not yet available. Cebu Pacific Air is the only airline flying to Ormoc. The flight is operated by Cebgo. For those coming from Manila or abroad, you’ll need to organize a trip to Cebu City first, then connect a Cebu Pacific flight to Ormoc. There are other ways of getting there, which we will talk about below.

Travel by bus or van to Palompon. From the airport, go to the Ormoc van and bus terminal found just behind the pier across Ormoc City Park. travel time from Ormoc to Palompon typically takes an hour and a half, depending on your route and mode of transportation. Fare for the van is from PHP 100-150. Bus fares are tad cheaper: PHP 50-60, but because buses stop over several towns your travel time will take considerably longer. once you arrive at Palompon, your drop-off point ought to be the town Ecotourism office.

Pay the fees at the Ecotourism Office. It’s located at the freedom Park, just beside the Municipal town Hall. access to the island requires an entrance fee; the local government use it to fund the island’s conservation efforts. The fee varies. We’ll list down the fees in another section below. (Scroll down!) All fees can be paid at the Ecotourism office.

Get a boat. aside from the conservation fee, there’s also the boat rental. Rental fees can go from PHP 3000 pesos for 15-seaters to PHP 4000 for the larger 30-capacity motorboats. There’s much more value for those traveling in large groups. You can hire a whole boat for yourself, or wait for other tourists to fill it up.

The Visayan Sea is a fairly busy waterway, and numerous vessels travel through it: fishing boats, fastcraft liners, even large interisland cargo ships. A couple of friendly fishermen waved at us as we navigated through.

Finally, after an hour or so of nothing but the blue and the sound of the boat’s motor, we saw the island. I told you earlier about patience. Well, good things come to those who wait. Kalanggaman is nothing short of a spectacle.

Flying to Ormoc City is the fastest and the most comfortable way to get to Kalanggaman Island, but there are other ways too.

Via Tacloban. You can also fly to Tacloban and take a 4- to 5-hour van ride to the town of Palompon. once in Palompon, visit the Eco-Tourism office and get a boat, as explained above.

Via Cebu by boat. You may also travel by sea to Palompon from Cebu. From Mactan Airport, take a cab to Pier 3, where you may board ship to Palompon (P500, 4 hours). but this will take a lot much more time.

In our case, we flew Cebu Pacific Air to Ormoc City through Cebu and stayed a bit in Ormoc, which we also recommend. Ormoc has its own set of attractions! Wee arrived at Ormoc during the height of the city’s Piña Festival, and we spent a couple of days in the city to partake in the festivities. By festivities we implied booze, tons of lechon, and of course, pineapples. Hectares of them. No wonder everyone was wobbly the morning we’re scheduled for Kalanggaman.

Cebu Pacific Air regularly provides great deals year-round. follow them on Facebook and Twitter to get updated with their newest promos.

Only morning flights to and from Ormoc are available, so plan ahead. better if you include your Kalanggaman trip as part of a larger itinerary. To get a fuller experience, leave for Kalanggaman as early in the morning as you can.

If you’re not staying for the night, it’s advisable to carry out your hygienic rituals before or after the island trip. Soap, shampoo, and detergents are strictly prohibited in the island.

Kalanggaman is far from the mainland, so mind your things and make sure that you don’t leave anything in the island. Not just your valuables, but also foodstuff, utensils, and leftovers.

Be very careful when exploring the island’s sandbars. They’re spectacular, but they come with a warning: the sandbars are prone to hazardous riptides. For your safety, avoid swimming in the eastern and western suggestions of the island whatsoever costs.

A big shout out to David of the Ormoc tourism Board, who had been very accommodating in discussing to us some of the much more elaborate details about the island. It’s from him that I learned the island was named Kalanggaman because of its bird-like shape. Langgam is the Waray word for bird.

Special thanks to our friends from Cebu Pacific for making this trip possible. From Mactan international airport in Cebu City, Cebu Pacific offers daily morning flights to Ormoc City.

DAPITAN ARCADE shopping & travel guide + What to Expect, What to purchase

Dapitan Arcade became a substantial part of my film and TV production days as well as my visual merchandising stint. It served as my ever-reliable wingman and best pal when I needed to source props, set decorations, and window display elements with a limited budget.

But this design paradise isn’t just for professional stylists and decorators. If you are into decorating and developing your living space, I bet you are familiar with it. anybody searching for reasonably-priced quality items is welcome! All you need is a good eye and a lot of time! good eye, because you’ll be bombarded by a gazillion options. and a lot of time, because, well, it’s easy to not notice how numerous hours you have burned hopping from one stall to another!

Dapitan Arcade is one of the most popular places to source decoration, furniture pieces, and other crafts in Metro Manila. but it’s chiefly known for its overflowing options for Christmas ornaments. Of course, there are other products including lighting or lamps, kitchen tools and utensils, vintage-looking items, picture frames, trinkets, and whatnot. but what attracts faithful customers and curious people is the relatively low price, less expensive than the average market rates.

If you are one of the curious peeps and it’s your first time going here, here are some of the stuff you’ll find and what to expect when you check out Dapitan Arcade.

Where is it located?

Dapitan Arcade is located at #39 Dapitan street corner Kanlaon Street, Barangay Sta. Teresita, Quezon City.

This is strategically located near the border of Manila and Quezon City, marked by the welcome Rotonda marble monument. This is the area where producers unload big bulk of their factory excess, export overruns, or surplus. Hence, it is in some cases called bagsakan.

The shops will then sell these export-quality items for a price lower than the market average. जीत-जीत!

Originally, Dapitan Arcade primarily refers to the old building on the corner of Dapitan street and Kanlaon Street. but it eventually developed into an inclusive surplus shop community that covers the main building and the surrounding tents, stalls, and even other buildings in the area.

How to get there?

Dapitan Arcade is very available whether you are taking the public mode of transportation or if you are driving your own car.

If you’re coming from anywhere near EDSA or easy access to any MRT Station:

Take the MRT to Quezon Avenue Station.

Ride a jeepney bound for Quiapo.

Get off at Burger King on the corner of Quezon Avenue and Kanlaon Street, just before you reach welcome Rotonda.

From Burger King, you can reach Dapitan Arcade on foot in 7-10 minutes.

From numerous parts of Manila City, simply ride a jeepney bound for DAPITAN.

If you are driving your own car, you can just use your Waze or Google Maps for directions. This will also let you know the live traffic situation.

Are there vehicle parking spaces?

For those bringing their own cars, designated vehicle parking slots are available, but you need to be there really early to get a slot.

Otherwise, you can just find a spot on the side of the road. There are locals who will offer to find you a vehicle parking spot and look after your automobile for a fee.

What are the operating hours?

Main Dapitan Arcade Building
8:00 AM – 7:00 PM
Monday – Sunday

Outside Tents/Stalls
7:00 AM – 10:00 PM
Monday – Sunday

Note: This is just the typical opening hours. The opening time and closing time may vary per tent/stall.

When is the best time to go?

Early morning. As much as possible, go there early in the morning when the crowds are small and the sun is not too harsh.

We arrived there at around 11 AM and there were quite a lot of people already. The volume of the crowd was steadily enhancing near lunchtime. The top hours or the busiest time is in the afternoon.

How to Enter

In the past, you just enter and exit the main Dapitan Arcade building anywhere. However, during these remarkable times, the designated entrance to the main building is on the Dapitan street side.

Register first. better if you have your own pen.

Next, the guard will check your temperature.

Start exploring! Don’t forget to practice proper social distancing.

If you exit and you need to reenter, just go back to the same entrance and tell the guard you have already registered before so you won’t need to register again.

What are the products sold at Dapitan Arcade?

From the moment you arrive, you will be bombarded with various kinds of items. It’s an overwhelming experience. items sold vary. There are stalls that sell the same stuff over the years, but there are also those that switch items or modify their displays depending on the season. Others just add seasonal items to their regular products.

Here are some of the things you’ll see while exploring. For the prices, you may check out Dapitan Arcade’s official website.

Dapitan Arcade shopping & safety Tips

Planning to go to Dapitan soon? here are some suggestions that might be valuable to you:

Go there early to avoid the crowd. We are still in a pandemic, so if you really want to go here, make the effort to wake up early. Honestly, there were moments when people failed to practice social distancing, particularly on narrow paths and at crowded places during busy hours.

You can work out the price, especially if you are purchasing in bulk. but remember that the prices are already cheap, so don’t haggle too much. The companies need to survive too. Let’s help each other, especially during these hard times.

Shop around. If you have time, canvass items and compare prices first before you do your final purchase. Don’t purchase on the spot. much more typically than not, you will find the same items in other stalls/shops.

EXPLORE! Again, there are lots of other stalls and shops aside from the main indoor market. In fact, there’s a new bigger building adjacent to it. The entrance is along Kanlaon Street. There are also stalls and tents lining the side streets around the area.

Before leaving, make sure to check the items for scratches or defects. We found items that had some minor hits but they were rapidly replaced when we asked.

Please deal with the items with care when checking them out. put them back exactly where you picked them up.

If you are bringing your car, don’t leave your valuables and gadgets inside. place them in the trunk or bring them with you. but …

Secure your valuables. always keep an eye on them.

Bring sun protection like shades, a hat or an umbrella if you plan to explore the stalls and shops outside the main building. The sun can be brutal in the afternoon.

If you have your own reusable shopping bags, bring them to reduce the consumption of plastic bags.

How to get to SAPPORO from TOKYO or OSAKA

The northernmost Japanese prefectural capital, Sapporo is a little bit harder to reach than other cities in the Land of the Rising Sun. direct international flights are limited to a handful of countries, and the shinkansen reaches only as far as Hakodate in the southern suggestion of Hokkaido.

But no destination is far enough for a traveler identified to conquer a wonderland.

Sapporo is served by two airports, the Okadama airport and the new Chitose Airport. Okadama airport is used mostly for flights within Hokkaido.

If you’re flying to Sapporo directly from abroad, you will many likely land at the new Chitose Airport. There are direct flights coming from Korea, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia, Honolulu, Guam, and in some cases Australia. many visitors connect in another major city, often Tokyo or Osaka.

You may also travel by train to Sapporo from Osaka or Tokyo. However, it’s something that I don’t recommend, unless you have a JR Pass. It’s time-consuming. even if you take the bullet train, you’ll still end up spending a day onboard. It’s also very expensive. I’ll discuss below.

Tokyo to Sapporo by Plane

Estimated travel time from Tokyo to Sapporo by plane is 1 hour and 40 minutes.

You’ll find year-round flights that costs under USD 100 (PHP 5000). JetStar is one of them.

Skyscanner

Tokyo to Sapporo by Train

Take the Shinkansen Hayabusa to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station. travel time: 4.5 hours. Reserved seat fee: ¥11,130 ($100, P5000).

Switch to limited express Hokuto Line and alight at Sapporo Station. travel time: 3 hours, 40 minutes. Reserved seat fee: ¥1550 ($14, P700); Unreserved seat ¥1290 ($11.5, P580).

One-way travel from Tokyo entails the following:

Total travel time: 8+ hours (excluding the layover time)
Total fare: ¥14,140 (excluding the seat fees)

If you add the seat reservation fees for the two legs to the fares, the whole journey would cost you around ¥26,820 ($240, P12,000). That’s just one way!

Osaka to Sapporo by Plane

Flights from Osaka takes around 2 hours. Fares are just a bit pricier.

Skyscanner

Osaka to Sapporo by Train

To get to Sapporo from Osaka, you will need to make a transfer in Tokyo.

From Shin-Osaka station (not to be confused with Osaka Station), take the Shinkansen Nozomi to Tokyo Station. travel time: 2 hours, 33 minutes. Reserved seat fee: ¥5700 ($51, P2550); Unreserved seat fee: ¥4870 ($44, P2180).

Take the Shinkansen Hayabusa to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station. travel time: 4.5 hours. Reserved seat fee: ¥11,130 ($100, P5000).

Switch to limited express Hokuto Line and alight at Sapporo Station. travel time: 3 hours, 40 minutes. Reserved seat fee: ¥1550 ($14, P700); Unreserved seat ¥1290 ($11.5, P580).

Total travel time (excluding layovers): 10.5+ hours
Total fare (3 legs): ¥18,140

If you add the seat fees, the total cost of the journey from Osaka to Sapporo is at ¥36,520 ($326, P16,400).

That’s why we don’t recommend taking the train. You’ll reach Sapporo by plane much faster at half the price.

But if you’re going to multiple cities, then you will get great savings if you just book a JR Pass. This makes sense if you want to explore not just one or two cities. For example, if your schedule includes Osaka, Tokyo, and Sapporo in 7 days.

Also, riding the bullet train across the Japanese countryside is quite an experience too, so that’s something to consider.
