Ubud and central Bali Tour

Photos by Glenn Ituriaga and Kara Santos
Ubud is the heart and soul of Bali. Although it has become busier as more tourists flood in over the years, it remains the island’s cultural core. It has a lot to offer: breathtaking scenery, nature, more temples, and a quieter, more traditional atmosphere.

Although it is possible to stay in Ubud, most tourists visit only on a day tour. Klook has a lot of Ubud offers, but the two with the best itineraries are the following: a join-in shuttle service and a private tour package.

JOIN-IN shuttle SERVICE. This is a transportation service (with driver) only. It does NOT include entrance fees to each attraction and hotel pick-up/drop-off. but it will take you to key spots in Ubud.

PRIVATE tour PACKAGE. A private tour that includes hotel pick-up/drop-off, admission fees, and a bottled water. It has two more stops than the join-in shuttle service.

Here are the usual stops.

Tegenungan Waterfall

Tegalalang Rice Terrace (optional jungle swing experience)

Ubud Monkey Forest

Ubud Art Market

Elephant Cave (not included in the join-in shuttle service)

Tirta Empul holy Springs (not included in the join-in shuttle service)

Uluwatu Temple

Pura Luhur Uluwatu is a Hindu sea temple that sits atop a cliff. It is one of the six key temples that make Bali’s spiritual pillars. The main temple is open only to worshipers. However, visitors are treated to a spectacular view of the sea from outside the temple.

The temple ground is visited by monkeys dwelling in the forest that surrounds it. These monkeys are known to snatch things from visitors so take care of your belongings, especially your accessories like sunglasses. There’s a cliffside pathway also that gives visitors different viewing points of the Indian Ocean, the tides, and the sunset. You need to wear sarong and sash to enter the temple ground. These are provided at the temple for free. the best time to go is early afternoon, just before the crowd thickens, as it is one of the best places to see the sunset on the island. In fact, the famous Kecak Dance, a Balinese art form, is performed daily starting at dusk, affording the audience to watch two beautiful masterpieces — the dance and the sunset.

At around 6 PM, Kecak (pronounced “ke-chak”) dance is performed daily on a cliffside open-air venue within the temple grounds of Uluwatu Temple. It is based on the epic Ramayana, focusing on how Rama and his brother rescued his abducted wife, Sita, with the help of the monkey king and his troops.

Kecak dance is characterized by the chanting and dancing of 75 men while the performers re-enact some of the scenes from the epic tale. It is recommended to go there early at least an hour ahead to secure a good spot. You can purchase your ticket in advance too.

Admission Fee: IDR 30,000

Kecak dance Fee: IDR 100,000

Opening Hours: 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM; 24/7 for worshipers

Kecak dance Schedule: Starts at 6:00 PM daily

Location: Uluwatu Temple, Pecatu, South Kuta, Badung Regency, Bali

Lines can be too long. but you can book your ticket in advance through Klook. You can also join a tour which includes a Kecak dance ticket via Klook. The tour package includes roundtrip transfers (hotel pick up and drop off) and tour driver.

The town of Ubud is hemmed by dense forest and rice paddies. aside from being the cultural and art center of Bali, incorporating agriculture in tourism has become popular in the central region. Alas Harum is one of those places that promote agro-tourism. The place offers coffee experience — coffee testing and coffee store — and extreme activities.

The super extreme swing took my breath away! There are three types of swings: super extreme swing, super swing, and couple swing. other activities are flying fox and sky bike. Note: as of writing, flying fox (zip line) is under maintenance. If you want to try the swing, you will be strapped in safety harness so it’s better to wear pants or shorts. For photo aesthetic, you can rent a wrap-around train skirt or wear kimono-type outerwear.

Aside from the adrenaline-pumping activities, the whole place has various Instagram-ready spots.

The usually foggy Bedugul mountain range gives it a mystic vibe. but unlike the two sea temples that are characterized by roaring waves, Pura Bratan is a picture of calmness and serenity.

WHICH IS BETTER: exchange money or use ATM Abroad?

When traveling abroad, which is the better way of getting foreign currency: exchanging money or withdrawing from ATM? Is it better to exchange before the trip or in the destination? should I convert to us dollars first or is it better to convert directly?

These are just some of the questions we frequently receive from our readers. Unfortunately, I don’t have clear-cut blanket answers to these because, as much as I hate answering questions with “It depends,” it really depends on a lot of factors.

It depends on your destination, their policies, and how commonly accepted your home currency is in that country. It depends on your bank, its charges, its exchange rates and its compatibility with financial institutions in your destination. It depends on the availability of these options in your destination. and it depends on the length of your trip.

What I prefer

But I can tell you what I prefer most of the time:

For trips shorter than 5 days, if the foreign currency is widely available here — like us dollar, Australian dollar, Japanese yen, Korean won, Hong Kong dollar — we exchange here before the trip. For currencies that are not usually available where I live, we withdraw from the ATM when we reach the destination.

For longer trips, we I prefer withdrawing cash from the ATM abroad.

We rarely use money changers abroad.

Why withdraw from ATM abroad

Here’s why we usually prefer using the ATM to get cash:

ATMs usually offer better exchange rates compared to money changers abroad. In our experience, at least. Every now and then, we find money changers with rates that are more favorable than banks, but they are few and far between. give me a random money changer and a random ATM, and there’s a big chance that the ATM will provide a better rate.

ATMs are almost everywhere. In most destinations, it’s easier to find a good ATM than a trusted money changer. Most, because there are exceptions. In some islands and remote corners of the world, finding a working ATM can be a challenge. Yep, even in this day and age. but in most cities, ATMs are ubiquitous.

ATMs are more convenient. Sometimes, even if you find a terrific money changer, the ATM can still be the wiser choice. most people don’t realize that unless they’re exchanging a substantial amount, the difference is not that big. If you need to ride the train or taxi to get to a good money changer, the fare might be higher than what you thought you had saved.

I don’t like carrying large sums of cash. An ATM card has an added layer of protection. If your cash gets stolen, that’s it; goodbye, money. but if your ATM card is stolen, you have time to have it blocked and protect your funds.

That said, it is important to use your ATM card strategically. You can’t just withdraw a small amount or whenever you like, as you do at home. depending on your bank, a fee is typically charged PER TRANSACTION.

The key is to withdraw as seldom as possible but without you ending up with a lot of cash on hand. For a 10-day trip, you can withdraw once or twice.

Vins and I typically travel together. only one of us will withdraw cash and divide it between us. then we’ll settle when we get home. If the trip is long, we usually take turns especially if we’re visiting multiple countries with different currencies. This way, we minimize the number of transactions.

Again, this is not absolute. There are exceptions. There are cases wherein exchanging money makes more sense.

When is it better to exchange money?

Here are some cases wherein I would prefer exchanging currencies instead.

If you live near a bank or money changer offering good rates and you only need a small amount. This way, you don’t need to worry about it when you’re in your destination. If I live near a Sanry’s or Czarina and my trip is only for a few days, I’ll definitely exchange before the trip.

If your ATM card is not compatible with ATMs in your destination. Often, having a Mastercard, Visa or Cirrus logo is a terrific indication. but not all banks have international arrangements set up. If you’re not sure, check with your bank.

If access to an ATM is limited in your destination. There are islands and remote areas where it’s challenging to find a working ATM, but money changers abound. In this case, it’s best to make sure you have the local currency before you go there. but if youwill be jumping off from a city with an ATM, you can withdraw there before heading to your final destination.

If there are no ATMs at the airport and you need to take public transportation to get to your hotel. airport rates are bad, so if you’re buying local currency at the airport, just exchange a small amount and just withdraw when you’re in the city center.

If you know you’ll be making a purchase beyond the withdrawal limit.
Banks usually have a daily withdrawal limit. If you feel like you’ll go over and you need to make this purchase, then the ATM is not your pal this time.

Have a Contingency Fund

For trips longer than a week, even though I plan to withdraw from the ATM, I make sure I bring a small contingency fund in CASH.

You might be asking, if I’m bringing an ATM card with me, why do I still have to bring cash?

It’s because I also want to be prepared in case I run into ATM troubles, which happened to me more than a few times before. It’s best to have extra cash in case of the following:

Your card gets stolen.

You misplace your card.

The machine won’t accept your card.

You can’t find an ATM.

Hence, I also bring some cash as contingency reserve.

It doesn’t have to be a big amount. I usually just bring 200 USD/EUR. This should be enough to allow me to survive while I figure out a fix to the ATM problem.

I also bring credit cards, just in case.

And make sure that you don’t keep the cash and the cards in the same place.

ATM Scam: dynamic Currency Conversion

Some ATMs will offer you what they call “Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC)“. It’s sometimes called Cardholder preferred Currency (CPC). Don’t fall for it.

When you withdraw abroad, the ATM will ask you whether or not you want to be billed in your card’s original currency (PHP if your card is from the Philippines) or in the destination’s local currency. If you agree to be billed in your home currency, you’re letting them set their own exchange rate. This is where they will rip you off because they will use a bad exchange rate and sometimes add a markup or foreign transaction admin fees.

So what should you do? always select the destination’s local currency.

If you’re in Thailand and the machine asks, “Would you like to be billed in BAHT or in your card’s home currency?” choose BAHT.

In Korea, if the machine asks, “Would you like to be billed in WON or in your card’s home currency?” choose WON.

In Singapore, if the machine asks, “Would you like to be billed in SGD or in your card’s home currency?” choose SGD.

In this example, if I chose to proceed with dynamic Conversion, I would have lost P1200 for withdrawing 2000 Croatian kuna. That’s a lot of money.
Always decline the dynamic conversion. always choose to be billed in the destination’s local currency.

Money Changer Scams

First of all: Do not make any transaction with a random stranger! They may be exchanging fake money.

Instead, find a trusted company that offers good rates. There are a lot of honest money changers but there are also a lot of rotten ones who will try to rip you off.

Some shops display your currency and the selling RATE, not the buying RATE. If you want to get local currency, you should be looking at the buying RATE. For example, if you’re in Poland but you’re carrying EURO and you want to exchange it to zloty, you’re probably gonna notice money changers with displays that read, “WE SELL: EURO = 4.50.”

These money changers at touristy places in Poland display selling rates instead of buying rates.
Looks like a terrific deal! The thing is, you’re looking at the wrong rate because what it says is that they will sell you their euro for 4.50 zloty. What you need is the buying rate because they will be buying your euro.

Cash vs credit Card

Is it better to pay cash or with a credit card?

That depends on the country or city you will visit. In some destinations in Europe (like Iceland and Sweden), credit card is the more preferred method of payment even at street stalls. In most areas, both are common. In some, cash is still king.

To be honest, our credit card’s spending limit isn’t that big, so we reserve the it for online transactions, especially when booking flights and hotels. more often, we pay cash.

Regardless, we always bring a credit card when we travel because some hotels would ask for it upon check in. Otherwise, you might be forced to make a cash deposit.

Once again, if you’re using your card and you’re asked if you want to be billed in the local currency or the home currency, make sure you choose the local currency. This is dynamic conversion at play.

Other frequently Asked Questions

When is the better time to exchange money: before the trip or when you arrive in the destination?

Again, that depends on the destination.

For example, in Singapore, I don’t mind using money changers. most change esta

HOW TO avoid PICKPOCKETS IN EUROPE: 10 things I learned from Experience

It was something I didn’t think would happen to me.

After nearly a decade of being a travel blogger and checking out nearly 50 countries, a part of me thought that I would not fall victim to pickpockets even in Europe. I know, lots of of Europe’s big cities are notorious for pickpockets. I had been alerted by friends and documentaries. and I am always extra careful when I travel, especially when on public transportation. but sometimes, sh*t happens.

Here’s what happened:

When we arrived in Athens, we excitedly went straight to the metro station. It wasn’t our first time in Athens. We were confident. The journey to the city center was uneventful for the most part. That changed when we transferred to another line to get to our hotel.

When we switched trains, a group of men boarded with us. two of them positioned themselves on either side of the door. Both on the phone, playing the same game. When we reached our stop, the door unexpectedly malfunctioned. It got stuck and won’t open. one of the people tried to open it and asked me for help. Panicking that I might miss my stop, I helped hold it. just when the train was leaving, the door magically opened and I got out. It wasn’t until the train had gone when I realized that my phone was missing. someone stole it.

After the incident, when we searched the web for what to do next, we found out that this was actually a pretty common scam on the Athens metro. The pickpockets work as a group. someone does something to the door to get it stuck, and while the victim is trying to open it, another person fishes the phone or budget out of your bag or pocket. They use the panicky situation as a distraction.

Pickpockets are common in lots of touristy parts of the world, but this problem is especially severe in Europe’s big cities — Berlin, Paris, Rome, Milan, Prague, Athens to name a few. Barcelona, in particular, has been identified pickpocket capital of the world by TripAdvisor and the national geographic show Scam City. Asians are said to be a favorite target because credit scores cards are not big in lots of Asian countries, which indicates we bring a lot of cash with them when they travel. These criminals know this.

And so I made a decision to write this post. lots of of these ideas are things I already knew even before the incident, but it would be great to have something to remind myself and refer to again in the future! If you’re traveling to Europe soon, here are some do’s and don’ts to keep in mind!

1. DON’T bring too lots of bags.

Pickpockets normally operate in places where they will find new tourists — on the metro, at train stations, and bus terminals. तिमिलाई थाहा छ किन? because tourists who have just arrived are the easiest targets. a lot of of them are clueless, scared, overwhelmed, confused or exhausted after a long flight. They’re also very easy to distract.

This is why you must lessen the number of bags that you carry. You just can’t keep an eye on all of them at the same time. The a lot more bags you have, the a lot more items you need to watch, the much easier it is to lose something. Pickpockets know this and they will take advantage of it.

One of the best ways to secure your belongings is to keep a hand on your bag, normally on top of the zipper or opening. You only have two hands!

2. DON’T let your valuables out of sight.

First of all: Don’t put your budget in your back pocket. It’s the easiest to steal!

Keep your bag in front of you and keep an eye on it.

Make sure your bag is in your front!

If you have a carry bag, put it in front of you and place a hand on the opening.

If you have a backpack, wear it backwards so it is in front of you when on the metro or seated on the bus.

When eating at a restaurant, don’t put your bag on the empty chair next to you.

When walking or shopping, always make sure that your bag doesn’t step to your side or back.

Always, always, always keep your bag in front, where you can see it.

Moreover, don’t be flashy. Leave your jewelry and fancy enjoy at home. You’ll only make yourself a target.

3. DO invest in a money belt.

A money belt is a small bag that you can wear around your waist or torso. It’s sort of a fanny pack but it’s smaller and you can hide it under your shirt. This is one of the best ways to secure your cash or cards. It’s great because it’s very close to your body and you can keep your valuables in front of you and away from outside view.

Pickpockets will always choose the much easier targets when they can. If they have a choice, they will go after someone who has their budget in the back pocket or backpack than someone with no visible valuables.

4. DON’T be distracted.

Pickpockets in Europe are exceptional for one thing — creativity. They normally operate in groups. One is the actual pickpocket, another serves as a lookout or hides the item, while the rest block your view, rattle you, or keep your attention away from your valuables. The distractions can be any of the following:

Someone passes out in front of you and while your attention is on them or you get caught in the commotion, someone else is stealing your valuables.

Someone squirts ketchup, mustard or bird poop on your tee shirt or jacket, and while you’re cleaning it up, someone is busy cleaning out your purse or pocket.

Two people fight loudly and while you enjoy them bicker, someone else is trying to rob you.

Someone, normally pretending to be deaf-mute, asks you to sign a petition. While you’re busy writing your name, an accomplice gets your wallet/phone.

Someone pretends to be another vacationer and asks for direction.

A sexy lady starts being relaxing with you. While you’re busy getting too close, she and another person are busy emptying your budget without you knowing it.

The door of the train malfunctions and the passenger closest to it helps you open the door so you could exit. What you don’t know is, while you’re trying to hold the door, an accomplice is fishing your phone/wallet from your bag or pocket.

And if something happens, keep your cool. safe your belongings and walk away.

5. DON’T be predictable.

The easiest targets are those whose moves can be easily predicted. If you unexpectedly decide to do something they didn’t foresee, you won’t fall into their trap and their plan is ruined. They’ll probably just step on to another target.

For example, as mentioned, lots of pickpockets on the metro or bus operate as a gang. They pick their targets and then they step to their respective positions. One or two stay on either side of the door, waiting for their victim. They expect you to exit through the same door you entered. but if you get off through another door, they won’t have time to adjust. If they try, it’s gonna be very suspicious.

Since the incident, when riding the metro and we see people standing by the door, Yosh and I don’t enter and exit through the same door, unless the train is very packed.

6. DON’T keep all your valuables in the same place.

I lost my phone but I kept thinking about how much a lot more inconvenient it would have been if they took my budget instead. My budget had my cash, ATM cards, credit scores cards, and other IDs. It would have been a nightmare!

As the saying goes, don’t put all your eggs in one basket. keep your valuables in separate places, so in case you lose one, you don’t lose everything. This is true especially if you also carry cash.

Yosh and I always use our cards — ATM card to withdraw money and credit scores cards for some transactions — but we also carry a contingency fund with us, in the form of cash, just in case our cards won’t work or get stolen. If you’re like this too, make sure you separate the cash from your cards. Otherwise, there is no point.

7. DO look out for each other.

If you’re part of a bigger group, enjoy each other. Do a buddy system. It was something that we always do all the time, but for some reason we failed to do that day.

Before the thugs stole my phone, when the door of the train was malfunctioning, Yosh said he called me over to just use another exit. but I didn’t hear him. We got separated. If we didn’t, my phone probably wouldn’t have been stolen. Or at the very least, it would have been harder for the thieves to pull it off.

Since the incident, we agreed to look out for each other a lot more carefully. When he’s walking ahead, I enjoy him while I have a hand on my bag. He does the same for me. When he starts dozing off on the metro, I wake him up. If he really needs to catch some sleep, I make sure he’s in a a lot more safe place and I stand guard. He does the same for me.

Since then, we have never lost anything.

8. DON’T be complacent.

When you have been traveling for a long time, there is that air of confidence. It’s like, “I know what I’m doing. I got this.” That’s good, but it shouldn’t be an excuse to let your guard down even though you have been in that destination before. I got robbed in Athens, a place that I have checked out before. I was a little bit a lot more relaxed.

In addition, don’t depend on too much. search the web and you’ll find many accounts from tourists who got approached by over-friendly strangers. Sometimes, they’re locals eager to help you or other tourists asking a favor. In lots of cases, they’re pickpockets about to steal something from you or leading you to a trap, where you’ll be forced to get something at an astronomical price, make a big donation, or steal your credit scores card details.

In a Facebook post, a Pinoy vacationer shared his experience in Moscow. While he was sightseeing, a group of female tourists asked him to take a group photo of them. because they were also tourists, he obliged. The girls introduced themselves, where they were from, and they had a friendly conversation. before leaving, they asked if they could take a selfie with him. What he didn’t realize while he was posing for the camera, one of the girls was trying to take out valuables from his bag. He even caught it in pictures!

In Paris, a friend of mine was approached by a friendly local who used to help them find their destination. He didn’t steal from her but he unexpectedly charged her for “helping” and would not accept small payment.

It’s fine to be friendly, but don’t let your guard down.

9. DO get insured.

In the end, I was able to get a new phone because I was insured.

Travel insurance is something you won’t need to use but you’ll be thankful you have in case something happens. Yosh and I are insured. For years, we have been paying for travel insurance, health insurance, life insurance, and gadget insurance. but this was the only time we ever had to make use of it during travel.

10. DON’T beat yourself up too much for it.

It can happen to the best of us.

Just recently, the legendary Rick Steves fell victim to pickpockets in Paris. That’s Rick Steves! He’s an expert when it pertains to Europe travel. If experienced travelers get duped by these thieves, don’t kick yourself in the butt too much if it happens to you.

What you must do is keep a presence of mind and act quickly.

If your phone is stolen, call your service provider to cancel the SIM and deactivate your phone remotely if you can. Then, change your passwords!

If your cards are stolen, call the issuing bank to cancel your cards immediately.

If your passport is stolen, get in touch with your embassy.

Then proceed to the nearest police station to file a report. It’s very unlikely that you will be able to retrieve your stuff, but it’s always best to make and keep an official record of what happened because you might be able to use it in the future.

HOW TO save money IN DUBAI (AND 9 cool things TO DO THERE!)

Updated: 8/2/20 | August 2nd, 2020

Dubai is a big stopover destination for travelers flying Emirates Airlines as they transit around the world (or Etihad passengers if they decide to visit from Abu Dhabi). It was how I ended up there. I was transiting to/from the Maldives.

As I explored the city, I concerned realize the rumors I heard were true: Dubai was expensive.

But like every destination (except maybe Bermuda), I found plenty of ways to save and visit on a budget.

In Dubai, the ways to save are not obvious. They are hidden far below the surface as the city. much like Las Vegas, Dubai is developed to extract as much money from you as possible.

Fortunately, I had some local friends share their secret suggestions with me during my trip. Today, I’m going to share those suggestions to help you save money in Dubai — and I’ll share some of my favorite activities too!

How to save money in Dubai

Dubai doesn’t have to bust your budget but it easily can if you aren’t careful! like many cities with incredibly high prices, numerous of the city’s residents have found suggestions and tricks on how to squeeze every last dirham possible.

Use Groupon – Groupon is huge in Dubai and you can find tons of discounts, 2-for-1 specials, and deals on the website. If there is something you want to do, check there first as there is a high chance you’ll find a discount (including eating out as there are a lot of restaurant deals here).

Get The Entertainer – The Entertainer, a magazine and app that provides discounts and specials on restaurants, hotels, and activities. There’s one for the UAE that all locals promise by. You’ll get 2-for-1 specials and discounts on attractions, restaurants, drinks, clubs, them parks, and hotels.

You can pick up a copy when you arrive in Dubai at supermarkets and bookstores, or find an online version on their site (the app costs 445 AED or $121 USD). The hard copy costs 495 AED ($134 USD) but can rapidly pay for itself. check for sign-up sales too. in some cases you can find the app 50% off or get a totally free trial.

Find a cheap brunch – I strongly recommend attending brunch, as it’s a tradition among locals in Dubai and quite fun. Every Friday, locals flock to a midday buffet of limitless drinks and food. As the day goes on, it often turns into debauchery that would make Nero proud.

However, brunch is not a cheap affair. Some cost as much as 700 AED ($190 USD). Therefore, knowing where the deals are very important.

Warehouse and rock bottom are two of the most affordable you’ll find in the city, with prices between 150-300 AED ($40-80 USD) per person. For a good alcohol-free brunch, try much more or Beirut.

You can ask people on Couchsurfing too. There’s an active Dubai group on the site.

Attend a pleased hour – The lifeblood of any drinker, pleased hours are where you can go to save a buck: from McGettigan’s drink specials (29 AED ($8 USD) for selected house drinks) to The Agency’s 100 AED ($27 USD) bottle of wines. Dubai is full of pleased hours (and drink specials can be found in The Entertainer too). To see what current pleased hours there are in Dubai, check out:

The best pleased hours in Dubai

15 best places with pleased hours in Dubai

TimeOut’s list of pleased hours in Dubai

Moreover, check out the app Guzzler, which also lists the current best pleased hours in the city.

Eat in Old Dubai – step away from the hotels, malls, and fancy souks implied to make you think you are in Aladdin and head into Old Dubai for cheap eats. meals at restaurants in this area typically cost 35-62 AED ($10-17 USD). I really loved Al Usted, an Iranian restaurant near the Al Fahidi metro.

Take the metro – While the metro only really cuts through the middle of the city, it does go to the marina, airport, and Old Dubai. At 8 AED ($2 USD), it’s less expensive than any taxi. If you do need to take a taxi, prices start at 12 AED ($3.25 USD) and go up 2 AED $(0.50) per kilometer.

To keep your transportation costs low, pick accommodation near a metro stop.

Know where the cheap accommodation is – hotels in Dubai are expensive. Fortunately, all the major hotel chains have locations here so if you have hotel points, use them. point redemptions are a bargain here. I used my SPG points for a night at the Sheraton for 10,000 points! (Start travel hacking today if you want to earn totally free hotel stays!)

If you lack hotel points or simply don’t want to stay in one, there is a very active Couchsurfing community in the city. I would certainly recommend contacting residents before you visit and see if anybody has a room.

Airbnb is also an inexpensive option here. You can find private rooms starting at 128 AE ($35 USD) and entire apartments from 312 AED ($85 USD) — though only if you boo early (last-minute bookings will cost around double).

There are also five hostels in town that cost 55-146 AED ($15-40 USD) per night.

What is a Casa Particular? All You requirement to understand about These Homestays in Cuba (with Video)

because returning from Cuba, you may have discovered that we’ve been raving about exactly how fantastic the casa particular experience is in the country. staying with a regional family, eating Cuban food, smoking cigars with the house owners as well as discovering about the nation’s culture as well as history from genuine people was one of the major highlights of our trip. It’s likewise much simpler to experience this now with business like CubaCasa assisting to make on the internet booking quick as well as easy.

There are lots of state-run hotels in Cuba as well as they are rather good as well, frequently set in old colonial buildings as well as in some cases even including wi-fi (!). however they just can’t compare to the experience of staying in a casa particular.

In this short article we’ll provide you a great concept of precisely what a casa specific is, exactly how to book them, exactly how much they generally expense (don’t worry, it truly won’t cut into your Cuba budget!) as well as what you ought to expect during your stay. We likewise have a quick video of our preferred casa at the bottom of this publish so certainly inspect that out.

The history of Casa Particulares

In Spanish, the casa specific actually implies “private home”. In 1997, the Cuban government revealed that Cuban households might register their house as a privately had company as well as lease out spaces to foreigners.

This was an huge step towards economic flexibility in Cuba. before 1997, all lodging in the country was completely state-owned as well as operated. This legalization of privately had company was one of the very first examples of the Castro administration borrowing hints from capitalism to in shape his idealistic views for a socialist Cuba.

Since Raul Castro took over, numerous much more economic reforms have taken location as well as these days, Cuban citizens are totally free to open restaurants, run hotels as well as even travel overseas. The future for Cuba is looking brighter as well as much more totally free every day.

Travel insurance coverage for Cuba

You’ll requirement to have travel insurance coverage in purchase to travel to Cuba. It’s really mandatory that all travellers have insurance, as well as you may or may not be asked to show proof of insurance coverage on arrival. To get a totally free quote from world Nomads, just go into your details below:

What is a Casa Particular?

Basically these are Cuban house stays, however in our experience there is much more privacy in a Cuban casa specific than in a routine house stay that you’d discover in other parts of the world. numerous times, there is an entire separate home, or at least section of the home, for tourists to stay in.

The household is always there to assist you out as well as chat with you, however you’re provided a great deal of privacy as well. Don’t believe that just since you’re staying in a casa specific that you’ll be expected to hang out with the household 24/7. They want you to get out as well as check out their city as well as aside from some dinners as well as breakfasts, you’ll be left alone to check out as well as relax.

We selected to stay in casa particulars to ensure that we might satisfy the friendly regional owners.

How much Do Casa Particulars Cost?

Usually a casa will expense around $20 CUC which is equivalent to $20 USD since the CUC is pegged equal to the USD. You can get inexpensive mojitos as well as delicious, house cooked meals at practically every casa for a fraction of what you’d pay at a restaurant. A common dinner will expense between 5 CUC – 10 CUC, the parts are huge as well as the food is fantastic. Mojitos & mixed drinks are around 2 – 3 CUC.

How Do I book a Casa Particular?

Many on the internet booking sites like Booking.com, HostelWorld.com as well as HostelBookers.com just don’t include listings for Cuba, however HostelsClub has properties in quite much every town a traveler would likely visit. We had a fantastic experience with them as well as can honestly suggest them.

**UPDATE 2017: Finally! The prominent booking sites Booking.com as well as Airbnb are now providing listings for Cuba. Click right here to compare costs as well as see evaluations for casa particulars on Airbnb, as well as click right here for Booking.com.

How Do I Find My Pre-Booked Casa In Each Town?

We suggest calling or emailing each casa owner before you show up in their city. many of the time they will come as well as satisfy you at the bus station with a indication that has your name on it. It’s a great concept to organize this since there are numerous stories of people really being conned intoजाँदै छ (उनीहरूले विश्वास गरे कि उनीहरू बस स्टेशन मा धोखाधडी द्वारा बुकिएको कासा) थियो।

Marjan Hill: A benefit of Split is that you have nature right in the heart of the city. just steps from the old town, you’ll discover Marjan Hill. At 178 meters, it’s not the tallest mountain in the country by any type of means, however it’s still a excellent getaway from the city.

Look out for this indication when walking to Marjan Hill
To the right of the St. Francis Church near Republic Square, you’ll see a indication for the hill. walk with the back lanes, before arriving at the stone steps. hike up those stairs as well as you’ll reach a lovely vantage point. From there, you can select to sit as well as sip on coffee at the cafe, or continue as much as the top of the mountain, via the forest route, or the seaside trail.

Don’t miss this bit church on your walk
We walked up right here two times during our stay, as well as would have done it more commonly if the weather condition had cooperated.

The Emporer Diocletian’s Palace: This is an obvious must-see in Split, as well as one that you actually won’t be able to miss. found right next to the palace is the towering, 60 meter high Cathedral of Saint Domnius. This can be spotted quite much anywhere in the city.

Wander the Promenade: Thankfully, whoever designed the city of Split had the concept to produce a promenade running along the Adriatic Sea.

Starting at the “Riva” which is the pathway found in front of the primary pedestrian street, you can continue winding your method past the marina, with a park, along a cliffside…and then you’ll show up at a beach. This walk is around two kilometers long as well as is extremely scenic.

The views of the sea along the promenade are spectacular!
Visit the Islands: Did you understand that Croatia is really comprised of over 1000 islands?! many of them are just offshore from Split, making this a perfect day-trip from the city. inspect out the close-by islands of Hvar, Korcula as well as Vis…to name a few.

You can travel by ferry-boat, go on a sailing tour, or see the islands via seaplane! In the year 2014, seaplane service came to Croatia. You can fly with European Coastal Airlines from downtown Split to the neighbouring islands, or to the fairytale city of Dubrovnik. Plus, you can really cross the Adriatic Sea to Italy!

Check out our video:

Go on a day-trip: There are so many things to do around the city, I won’t even be able to listing them all. We suggest popping into the tourist office as well as enquiring about the tours on offer. Make sure to see the UNESCO site of Trogir, the Krka waterfalls, as well as the Plitvice Lakes…among other things.

Travel to one more Country: Split is in the perfect place to travel. Of course, you’re in the city to see the actual city, however why not add one more stamp to your passport?! We suggest renting a cars and truck in Split as well as travelling to Montenegro one day, as well as Bosnia & Herzegovina the next.

If you take the highway, you can get to Kotor, Montenegro in about 4.5 hours from Split (that would be a extremely long day trip though). A shorter trip would be from Split to Mostar in Bosnia & Herzegovina. This journey is only around 2 – 2.5 hours long. Don’t fail to remember your passport!
