HOW TO stay safe IN SOUTH AFRICA

Last Updated: 7/10/20 | July 10th, 2020

Each month, Kristin Addis from Be My travel Muse writes a guest column featuring suggestions and guidance on solo female travel. It’s an essential topic I can’t adequately cover, so I brought in an expert to share her advice. Here, she’s sharing safety suggestions for South Africa.

At the dinner table back home in California, I asked my friends to name the first thing that concerned their minds when they thought about South Africa. I expected them to say things like “elephants!” and “Lion King!” but instead “Ebola,” “soccer,” and “crime” were among the reactions I got.

When I told them that I would be traveling there by myself, they were horrified at the thought.

This is proof to me that much is misunderstood — or at the very least generalized and oversimplified — about this country, which has a lot much more going for it than some misplaced Ebola rumors and a world cup that took place a few years ago.

South Africa is huge and diverse, spanning 471,000 square miles, with a population of over 57 million and eleven official languages. Why does it have such a bad rap?

In this post, I’ll share my suggestions on how to stay safe during your visit because, as opposed to popular belief, South Africa is a perfectly safe place to travel as long as you follow a few basic steps.

Why Does South Africa have a bad Reputation?

South Africa is the first country I’ve went to where the locals have consistently told me that muggings and violent crime are a big problem. According to those I’ve spoken with, they’re also on the rise.

The statistics back this up. South Africa has the 9th highest rate of intentional homicide in the world. Rape is also a large issue in the country.

While this may seem off-putting, keep in mind that the USA has the 6th highest death toll when it concerns intentional homicide and that the homicide rate in a city like Cape town is on par with us cities like Baltimore and St. Louis.

For comparison, the 5 cities in the world with the highest homicide rates are all in Mexico — yet Americans still flock there each year on vacation.

Moreover, the homicide rate has gone down because apartheid ended, and there have been fewer murders in Cape Town’s five safest neighborhoods, where tourists tend to flock. It’s not a war zone — far from it. many violent crime takes place between people who know each other in harmful neighborhoods that tourists don’t tend to visit.

As in numerous countries, tourist> in South Africa are the targets primarily of petty crime.

Though there is are political, economic, and racial struggles, South Africa is not nearly as “scary” or “dangerous” as it is often perceived.

How to stay safe in South Africa

After spending nine weeks solo traveling through the country, I did find that I had to take much more precautions than I do in Southeast Asia or Germany, but the dangers are not all that different from the big cities back home in the united states or other parts of Europe.

While much of staying safe implies following the safety guidelines you obey back home and following your intuition, here are 7 suggestions to make sure you have a safe and fun trip to South Africa:

1. know Where Not to Go
Though crime rates are higher in the townships (settlements recognized during apartheid for forced racial segregation) staying safe does not imply staying out of them altogether. some of my favorite memories, such as drinks shared around an unlicensed bar, little kids swinging from my arms, and delicious streetside BBQ, all came from my time spent in the townships.

They’re friendly places. They’re just better went to during daylight hours and with a local guide who lives there and knows the lay of the land. This can be organized through your guesthouse or by seeking information from the tourism board.

Soweto in Johannesburg, for example, has walking, cycling, and even bus tours. It welcomes tourists thanks to the benefits of the money they bring in.

2. Don’t walk at Night
People tend to become targets by walking in cities rather than taking private or public transportation. even in a group, pickpocketing can occur, but it’s much much more likely to happen when walking alone. avoid walking alone when possible, especially at night.

3. Don’t be Flashy
Wearing jewelry or designer clothing and taking your phone/camera out in public are all great ways to become a target. Bringing expensive jewelry on getaway is not advisable in the first place, but if you do have pricey things like a camera, keep them hidden. and never keep your passport on you.

The much more likely it seems that you’re a foreigner who does not know the lay of the land, the much more likely you are to become a target for petty theft. put the phone away and take it out when safely at home or in a café.

4. Lock Your car Doors and keep Valuables Hidden
Other common occurrences, especially in big cities like Cape town and Johannesburg, are car break-ins and carjackings.

Avoid these by keeping the doors locked while driving and keeping absolutely everything — sunglasses, phones, bags, and wallets — out of sight. nothing of value or anything that seems like it could possibly be valuable, including cheap sunglasses, ought to be visible when the car is parked and unattended.

In the big cities, unlicensed parking attendants are always around to “watch” your car for you, so throw them a suggestion now and then for keeping an eye out for your car when you’re not around.

5. have a Dummy Wallet
Though I believe I stayed safe mostly because I didn’t walk around much, there were a few times when I got exhausted of being frightened and walked short distances instead of taking a taxi or a bus. To safeguard my belongings, I carried a “dummy wallet” that had just a few canceled credit report cards and a bit of petty cash in it, while I hid everything else in my shoe or, honestly, in my bra.

If anybody approached me, I planned to freely hand over my bag so that the thief had something to take while the rest was safely hidden. It never came down to this, as I never experienced any crime first-hand, but I felt ready ought to a thief approach.

6. Be aware and listen to Your Instincts
It also helps to be hyper-aware. If you should walk, take in your surroundings, look in every direction, make a point of letting everyone know that you’re paying attention by keeping your head up and looking alert. try never to be alone on a sidewalk, and get as close to families as possible.

I once walked down a quiet side street in the up-and-coming Woodstock area of Cape town and, realizing nobody was around, immediately turned around and went back to the busy main road. It felt sketchy, and my alarm bells sounded.

If someone appeared to be paying me too much attention, I’d look that person in the eye and say “hello” or step into a store with other people inside.

7. use common Sense
I thought about my safety precautions in South Africa compared to what I would do at home. I certainly wouldn’t walk around many parts of Los Angeles or other major American cities alone and wouldn’t even consider it at night, particularly not with my phone out.

I guard my bag like a hound in many major European cities due to the extremely high pickpocketing rates. It really wasn’t so different in South Africa.

***
It used to be that I couldn’t answer the question when asked about my favorite country I’ve been to. Now, I reply South Africa.

Though statistics can make it seem like a scary place, in reality I spent much much more time enjoying myself than ever worrying about being robbed or becoming a victim of violent crime. While safety ought to always be foremost in your mind, South Africa did not feel scary, uncomfortable, or dangerous.

Sure, you’ll need to take much more precautions than you would in, say, Thailand, but it’s still perfectly safe as long as you use common sense and follow the suggestions above.

HOW TO get around TOKYO BY TRAIN: guide for first Timers

Taxis are expensive, and buses can be confusing for first-timers. In Tokyo, the train is the most efficient mode of transportation. Tokyo has an substantial and expansive railway system. wherever it is you’re going, there is a lot of likely a train station very close to it.

Tokyo by train can be a bit overwhelming at first, but it’s easy once you get the hang of it. First, bear in mind that the network is used by nearly a dozen operators, including those serving the suburbs. However, in this article, let’s focus on the three companies that serve central Tokyo: JR East, Toei Subway, and Tokyo Metro Subway. Each of them operate multiple lines that get so entangled, it’s incredible how the Japanese make it work.

JR East

JR east controls the all-important JR Yamanote Line, a train loop that runs around Tokyo, linking the city’s crucial areas including Ueno, Shinjuku, Shibuya and Shinagawa. It also marks the boundary of central Tokyo. The area within the loop is considered central Tokyo.

Map created by RailRider, licensed under CC
Expectedly, this line is used by a good fraction of the population (which is me saying that it’s typically crowded, hehe). aside from Yamanote, JR also runs other lines including Chuo Main, Chuo-Sobu, and the Shinkansen (bullet train).

Subway Lines

The subway lines are operated by Tokyo Metro and Toei. Although separate companies, these two are in terrific synergy. Often, you don’t need to exit the gates and get new tickets even if you switch from Toei to Metro lines. (There are cases when you do, though.) subway lines are marked with an assigned letter in a color-coded circle. For example, Shinjuku Line’s mark is an S in a leaf green circle. Mita Line’s mark is a the letter I in a blue circle. remember these marks and the companies’ logos because this is how you’ll find them.

Tokyo Metro subway Lines

Toei subway Lines

You might be thinking, “Oh cool. That looks easy.” गलत। It seems easy to understand now, but if you’re a Tokyo newbie, it’s a lot a lot more tough in practice. These lines are so entangled, and when they meet in major stations like Shinkuku or Tokyo, things get even a lot more complicated. even I, who have been to Tokyo four times, and my sister, who has been living in Tokyo for years, often get awfully lost.

Types of Trains

Aside from the lines, you also might need to know the different train types:

The type of train is displayed in front of it or on the overhead boards.

Local Trains are those that stop at every single station of the line. EVERY. SINGLE. STATION. If your stop is 20+ stations away, it can take a lot of time.

Rapid Trains are those that skip some stations. same price as local trains. same platforms, too.

Express Trains skip even a lot more stations.

Limited express stop only at major stations. additional fee is normally required.

If it entails waiting only a few minutes on the platform, I would normally just choose a rapid or express train even when the a local train is already approaching. WARNING, though: Board the non-local trains only if you’re sure it will make a stop at your station. You don’t wanna skip your stop. सत्य कथा। Hahaha.

How to travel By Train using single Tickets

Tokyo subway route Maps are displayed above ticket machines. notice the one-day pass offer below it.

On your web browser, go to Hyperdia.com/en/. enter your origin and the station where you’re going. It will then display possible route options including how much the ride costs and transfers needed to get there. At the train station, you can double check the price. just look at the route map, normally above the ticket machines. The map displays the price based on distance. Sometimes, the map is in Japanese characters only, which is why Hyperdia is useful.

Once you know how much you’re gonna pay, technique the ticket machines. By default, these machines display everything in Japanese characters. but there is a button there that reads ENGLISH. press that button and you will hear a voice saying “All train information will be displayed in English.” (I said it out loud in the ideal intonation when I typed that. Totoo.)

Follow the steps onscreen. Usually, you will need to press the button (next to the screen) that displays how lots of passengers you are and then press the corresponding price on the screen. Yep, you must know how much you must be paying before using these machines, for this reason the first two steps. It will then ask you to confirm your booking.

Get the tickets that the maker will release. (If after getting the ticket you realize you made a mistake or you just change your mind, don’t worry. just use the same ticket. Fare adjustment machines are installed at every station. Make the adjustment at the destination.)

Feed your ticket to the ticket slots at the gate. It will emerge at the end of the gate. pick it up again. The ticket is small so try your best not to lose it.

Go to the ideal platform. To check if you’re in the ideal direction, check the list of stations normally displayed on a wall before the platforms. There is also a a lot more in-depth timetable in the middle of the platform.

Wait for the ideal train. The estimated time of arrival of the next few trains and the train type (Rapid, Local, etc) are displayed on electronic screens above the platform.

That’s it! If you get lost or you encounter any problem, don’t hesitate to technique the staff at the window. Every station has one.

Also, if you’re an adult, don’t even try getting a ticket indicated for kids just to get a discount. Children’s tickets make a distinct birdy sound when used at the gates to let the staff know that it’s really being used by kids. Yep, birdy.

How to get and use Suica or Pasmo Card

Prepaid IC Cards are also available. It seldom uses discounts, but the appeal of it is that you don’t need to get a ticket each time you’re using the train. You just need to swiftly hover the card over the reader and you’re through.

What’s the difference between Suica and Pasmo? The companies using it, mainly. Suica is sold by JR while Pasmo by Toei and Tokyo Metro. However, both cards work in any Tokyo Metro, Toei, or JR line. As far as the user experience is concerned, it’s very similar.

To get one, you just need to technique one of the PASMO or SUICA machines at the station. There’s no use for me to enumerate the steps here because it’s so easy. just choose ENGLISH on the welcome screen and follow the instructions.

These cards can also be used on buses. An boosting number of shops and other establishments are also accepting these cards as mode of payment. You can even use it to get drinks or snacks from vending machines.

Should You get one of Those One-Day Train Passes?

A lot of them are available but I find a lot of of them impractical. It only makes sense to use them if you’re making several train journeys in a day or two.

Tokyo complimentary Kippu (Tokyo excursion Ticket) allows you unrestricted access to any JR, Toei, or Tokyo Metro line within central Tokyo for one day. It costs ¥1590. It only makes sense if you’ll be riding the train several times in a day.

Tokyo subway Ticket grants you unrestricted access to all subway lines (Toei and Tokyo metro, NOT JR). Cost: ¥800 for 24 hours, ¥1200 for 48 hours, and ¥1500 for 72 hours. available at Narita and Haneda airport. This is a good deal only if a lot of of the attractions you’re gonna check out are close to a subway station.

There are lots of other variations, but the two above are the most common.

If you decide to purchase a Tokyo subway Ticket, we have a sample 2-day travel plan here so you can maximize the card. READ: the best OF TOKYO IN 2 DAYS!

Should You get a JR Pass?

If you’re staying in TOKYO only, NO, you don’t need a JR Pass.

It only makes sense to get a JR Pass if you’re on a multi-city journey around Japan. For example, if you will be checking out three cities in 7 days, it could be a terrific deal.

Before you purchase one, know that the JR Pass can only be used on JR line rides. You can’t use it on Toei or Tokyo Metro rides. So if you will be staying in Tokyo the entire trip, a JR Pass isn’t really worth it.

If your travel plan involves taking long-distance trains typically and you’re staying for 7 days, you can save money by getting a Train Pass.

Klook uses the least expensive JR Passes available.

Virgin Island, Bohol: Sand-Bending, No Trespassing

The warm water had totally swallowed the entire sandbar of Pungtud Island when our boat docked. My niece as well as nephew might not believe their eyes. For the very first time ever, they saw a sandbar, a lengthy, white sandbar that prolonged to the shallow sea from a little island. Immediately, the youngsters hopped out of the boat, ran to along the sandy runway, as well as made bit splashes along the way.

More commonly understood to tourists as Virgin Island, Pungtud Island lies in the middle of a fairly shallow area between Balicasag as well as Panglao Islands. It is always a crowd preferred since of its C-shaped naked sandbar.

“It appears like a snake!” my nephew exclaimed, referring to the shape of the island.

“Or a tadpole!” yelled my niece. It appears like so many things. A comma. A bent spoon. A hair follicle. A sperm cell. name it.

Pungtud Island on Google Maps (Satellite view)
Unlike in Balicasag Island, there’s not much to do right here other than bathe in the sun. One thing I like doing here, though, is to just sit or lie in the sand with my body half dipped in the shallow water. There’s not much area to swim around either since the island is surrounded by sea grass. It’s alright for snorkeling since there are some fish hiding underneath. however it can underwhelm visitors who just came from Balicasag.

But in the itinerary, I’d like to believe of Virgin Island as the “relaxing” part of the tour. You know, where you don’t make much effort to appreciate the sheer beauty of the surroundings. You just lie in the sand, make bit splashes in the water, drink fresh buko juice, share stories with household or friends, as well as just have pure, relaxing, fun time. other times, we liked pretending to be part of Aang’s entourage as well as try sand-bending.

Pungtud Island up close
My send-bender friends
Private part of the island

Years before, I utilized to sit beneath one of the trees in the central part of the island. Today, however, a fence runs around it as well as a signage marks whose area it is. That part of the island is private. Oh well, we can always enjoy the sandbar.

How to get to Virgin Island: From Tagbilaran or Panglao Island, there are many travel companies as well as hotels offering sea tours that include a stop here. You may likewise charter a personal boat for P1500-P2500, great for 8-10 persons.

Makati: top 10 budget hotels Under P2000 ($40)

Whenever friends from abroad traveling to Metro Manila for the first time ask for lodging recommendations, Makati is always on top of my list. It’s close to the airport and is not too far from Manila’s historical core. Its streets are lined with awesome dining selections, from fancy restaurants to weekend markets. Its mall strips make it a great shopping destination, too. and best of all, lots of lodging options, from hostels to luxury hotels.

If hostels are not for you and upscale suites are beyond what you can afford, then maybe a budget hotel is what you need.

We’ve rounded up the 10 best hotels under P2000 (USD 40) in Makati, as ranked by online users as of Feb 2017. note that (1) room rates vary depending on travel dates and availability, and (2) the published rates may not yet include taxes and service charge. There are links below each hotel photo where you can double check the final rate.

INTERVIEW WITH TIM LEFFEL

Updated: 10/28/19 | October 28th, 2019

Tim Leffel is one of the original budget travel gurus. He’s the author of The World’s least expensive Destinations, a book that helps travelers and expats stretch their travel dollars. As someone who loves a deal, I sat down to chat with Tim about his new book, budget travel, travel gear and saving money on family travel.

Nomadic Matt: You’ve been in the travel writing industry for a while. how has travel changed over the years?
Tim Leffel: The good and bad tend to cancel out a bit and it often depends on your point of view. The first time I circled the globe as a backpacker, there was no Internet, no email, no online banking. Plus, ATMs were scarce in a lot of countries so getting and changing money was always trying.

Now it’s all so basic that people can connect to whatever they need online from nearly anywhere. The dark downside of that is lots of travelers stay waayyyy too connected to home. physically they are abroad, but mentally they’re still connected to the safe and familiar idea of home.

That’s the greatest downside I see to travel now: so lots of people are in their home-based social media bubble instead of interacting with the new people and experiences around them.

The greatest plus is everything is much easier and a lot more organized now. If you can’t figure out how to get from place to place and find somewhere to stay now, you’re really dense.

Tell us about your book. Why did you write about this topic in particular?
I recently put out the fourth edition of The World’s least expensive Destinations. I wrote the first one a lot more than a decade ago because there was no good way to figure out which countries were the best values without doing a absurd amount of research. So I wrote the book I always wanted to buy. Thankfully lots of people felt like I did, and it has sold very well each year.

Each edition I update every chapter, removing countries where prices have gone up too much and adding others to take their place. It’ll save you 20-40 hours of research for ten bucks or so, and hopefully, it’s kind of fun to read when you’re dreaming or planning.

How do you pick the 21 destinations? Why these ones and not others?
It’s purely based on which are the best values — there’s no arbitrary $X per day figure. I’m trying to help both shoestring backpackers and vacationers with a bit a lot more cash to stretch their budget, so they tend to be countries with respectable infrastructure and plenty to do, but with very attractive prices that are far less than home.

For example, I originally didn’t include Cambodia because only the most hard-core backpackers and high-end fly-in luxe tourists were going. Now, the infrastructure is much better and there’s a broader base. Myanmar will probably get in next time for much the same reason if the reforms continue.

On the other hand, I removed Turkey this time because prices have risen rapidly there as the economy grows quickly. Still a respectable value, but not as good as Slovakia, which replaced it.

You’re a family man. Can you travel on a budget as a family? A lot of people don’t believe it’s possible.
There are lots of family budget travel blogs out there now showing you can undoubtedly do it, especially if you choose the places covered in my book. There are lots of families roaming around Southeast Asia and central America, spending less than they do on day-to-day expenses at home. You have to spend a lot more than a single or couple of course, but it’s easy to get decent-sized hotel rooms on the cheap in a lot of places or to rent an apartment or condo short-term.

Three of us traveled through Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam last summer on a budget of $150 a day after airfare. That’s not a backpacker budget, obviously, but we lived it up on that, eating every meal in a restaurant and staying in great hotels with room for three. When I tell friends and relatives we spent that, they don’t believe me. To them, it seems too cheap for a vacation. It’s all in your perspective.

We’ve done similar trips on a much lower budget in Mexico and Guatemala. There are families out there traveling on $60–$80 a day in plenty of countries and making it work.

Do you travel a lot with your family?
When I’m on a real writing trip where I’m going to have to be researching the whole time, I tend to go solo. but when I can mix that with some downtime, I take just my wife or my wife and daughter along. That’s much a lot more fun. My daughter got her first passport when she was three and has seen a lot. plus we’ve lived and traveled in Mexico for a year straight before and are going back there for two years in August.

What are your top three ideas for traveling on a budget with a family?
बिस्तारै गर्नुस्। You can’t be doing crazy check-the-box, bucket-list itineraries where you’re regularly on the move. pick a few priorities and use home bases to branch out. Don’t try to schedule a lot more thanone or two things a day.

Get a lot more space in the ideal lodging. You need rooms or apartments where you’re not falling over each other and where everyone else is coming in at 2am, while your precious is up and yelling at 6am.

It’s not all about you. compromise on what you’ll like and what’s best for the little one(s). for every museum, there must be a playground or mall in the mix, despite your feelings about that not being “travel.”

What is your essential travel gear?
Well, as editor of functional travel gear I’m trying out an outrageous amount of new apparel, luggage, and gadgets each year. I’m still a minimalist at heart though, so I try to take only high-impact items, preferably ones that are light and can do a lot more than one thing.

As a writer, I can go out with just a camera, pen, notebook, and a water bottle. but I guess the things I pack nearly every international trip are a Steripen water purifier, a multi-charger unit for the gadgets, a portable charger for when I don’t have time or place for an outlet, lightweight quick-dry clothes, a couple of pairs of good double-duty shoes, a small toiletry kit with the essentials, a good sun hat, and a real book or the Kindle. I hardly ever use my smartphone for non-work things though, so that sits in the room a lot.

Okay, time for some fun questions: Scariest “am I going to get out of this alive?” experience?
All of them involve bad bus rides really, from scary mountain passes to riding on top of one in Laos for hours. the worst though was one in Egypt — where idiot motorists hardly ever turn on their lights — in really thick fog. The motorist was still hauling ass at the normal speed and twice we nearly had a head-on collision with another bus. people and gear went flying everywhere. I really did start wondering if I would arrive alive.

Coolest “local” experience you were invited to?
Despite all the scams and hassles in Morocco, we trusted a person we met who was heading the same way as us and he took us all around Fez to places we never would have found, invited us to lunch with his family, introduced his friends, and told us where else we must go in the country. He didn’t want a thing from us, which shows often you have to let go of your suspicions. We also taught English in Istanbul and Seoul, so we went to a lot of parties and dinners with locals in those places.

What’s the greatest mistake you think people make and how can they avoid it?
The first would be trying to cram in too much and being on the step every day or two. That kills the budget a lot more than anything. Honorable mention: booking all lodging in advance. You’re guaranteed to pay a lot more money that way, especially if you’re a couple getting a room in places where you don’t have to be subjected to a dorm bed in a hostel. Instead, get to town earlier, look around, and negotiate.

You can find a lot more great ideas and information from Tim on his blog, his gear site, and Twitter.

10 complimentary and low-cost things to do in HANOI, Vietnam

The excitement wavered eventually. After seven cities, travel fatigue caught up. I finally was not looking forward to chasing another waterfall, trekking to another summit, or sitting on another long ride. even before I set foot in Hanoi, the eighth stop on my banana pancake trail, I had already convinced myself to not push through with the trip to Sapa and just stay in the city center. All I wanted  was a time on my own without exhausting any a lot more energy, which I was not sure where to get. All I wanted was to kick back this time. The Vietnamese capital, however, appeared to be not the place for it at first glance.

Hanoi’s streets are probably the craziest I have seen. Motorists drive without any care in the world. Honking seem to be a national sport. In the six days that I stayed in Hanoi, I had seen four traffic accidents involving motorcycles. but I did not allow any of them to drive me away. I stayed and, to my surprise, a respite wasn’t tough in any way to find. I slowly explored the city. Taking my time, I dropped any travel plan and just trusted my feet to take me anywhere they wanted. This is how I spent my six days in Hanoi and where I recommend you to go must you find yourself in this charming city.

Meet Uncle Ho at Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum

Ho Chi Minh requested that he be cremated and his ashes be scattered all over the country. but it looks like his country is still not ready to let him go. Instead, the Vietnamese government preserved his body and housed it in a enormous mausoleum. Uncle Ho, as a lot of Vietnamese call him, was a revolutionary leader and is widely regarded as the daddy of modern Vietnam.

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is modeled after Lenin’s in Russia
Built from 1973 to 1975, the memorial is modeled after Lenin’s Mausoleum in Russia. It is a commanding structure  in the middle of Ba Dinh Square, where he read the declaration of independence in 1945.

Admission is complimentary but policies are implemented strictly. photography is prohibited inside. tank tops and short skirts not allowed, either. Uncle Ho’s body isn’t at the mausoleum all year (as it is often sent to Russia for maintenance) so make sure you check before going.

Visit Ho Chi Minh museum and One-Pillar Pagoda

Standing next to the Mausoleum complex is the Ho Chi Minh Museum, also built in honor of Uncle Ho. It takes visitors on a trip through the history of Vietnam, with a strong focus on the country’s struggles against the French and the US-backed South Vietnam government. The museum houses over 120,000 documents, films, and artifacts about the life and work of the revolutionary leader. Surprisingly, its interior is modern and sophisticated that the storytelling becomes just as fascinating as the stories themselves.

Opening Hours: 8am to 12pm daily, 2pm-4:30pm, Tuesday-Thursday, Saturday-Sunday.

This KYOTO travel guide blog is your one-stop source of Kyoto travel tips. In this post, we put whatever we understand about Kyoto, Japan, including train passes, tour recommendations, as well as public transportation directions. We likewise included a sample diy KYOTO itinerary with expense estimates as well as breakdown of expenses.

It was mid-summer when I set foot in Kyoto for the very first time. The deciduous forest of the Arashiyama district was extremely rich as well as green, awfully green. eco-friendly is great; I like green. however as a guy who hailed from a tropical island carpeted in evergreen rainforests, it was not truly the color I was excited to feast my eyes on. The longer I walked, the more I realized that it was a error booking June tickets to Japan. What was I thinking? Was I even believing when I booked it? however kicking myself in the butt lasted for only a minute. summertime may not be the very best time to be here, however the proverbial silver lining appeared amidst the greenery. There were fewer tourists, as well as the weather condition was pleasant, perfect for a long afternoon walk.

That or I was just mastering the art of wonderful lemoning.

Before that trip ended, I did what every other typical travel blog writer does when composing about a location they enjoyed tremendously: make a solemn pledge to return. as well as return I did. धेरै पटक। since I’m typical like that. LOL.

How to get around Kyoto

Almost every key tourist attraction in Kyoto is accessible by train. Hence, if you ended up being familiar with the train system, you’re great to go. however it’s not that easy.

Kyoto station alone is massive. It is a behemoth of a terminal. Train as well as train lines operating to, from as well as around the city converge here. Ubud and central Bali Tour

Photos by Glenn Ituriaga and Kara Santos
Ubud is the heart and soul of Bali. Although it has become busier as more tourists flood in over the years, it remains the island’s cultural core. It has a lot to offer: breathtaking scenery, nature, more temples, and a quieter, more traditional atmosphere.

Although it is possible to stay in Ubud, most tourists visit only on a day tour. Klook has a lot of Ubud offers, but the two with the best itineraries are the following: a join-in shuttle service and a private tour package.

JOIN-IN shuttle SERVICE. This is a transportation service (with driver) only. It does NOT include entrance fees to each attraction and hotel pick-up/drop-off. but it will take you to key spots in Ubud.

PRIVATE tour PACKAGE. A private tour that includes hotel pick-up/drop-off, admission fees, and a bottled water. It has two more stops than the join-in shuttle service.

Here are the usual stops.

Tegenungan Waterfall

Tegalalang Rice Terrace (optional jungle swing experience)

Ubud Monkey Forest

Ubud Art Market

Elephant Cave (not included in the join-in shuttle service)

Tirta Empul holy Springs (not included in the join-in shuttle service)

Uluwatu Temple

Pura Luhur Uluwatu is a Hindu sea temple that sits atop a cliff. It is one of the six key temples that make Bali’s spiritual pillars. The main temple is open only to worshipers. However, visitors are treated to a spectacular view of the sea from outside the temple.

The temple ground is visited by monkeys dwelling in the forest that surrounds it. These monkeys are known to snatch things from visitors so take care of your belongings, especially your accessories like sunglasses. There’s a cliffside pathway also that gives visitors different viewing points of the Indian Ocean, the tides, and the sunset. You need to wear sarong and sash to enter the temple ground. These are provided at the temple for free. the best time to go is early afternoon, just before the crowd thickens, as it is one of the best places to see the sunset on the island. In fact, the famous Kecak Dance, a Balinese art form, is performed daily starting at dusk, affording the audience to watch two beautiful masterpieces — the dance and the sunset.

At around 6 PM, Kecak (pronounced “ke-chak”) dance is performed daily on a cliffside open-air venue within the temple grounds of Uluwatu Temple. It is based on the epic Ramayana, focusing on how Rama and his brother rescued his abducted wife, Sita, with the help of the monkey king and his troops.

Kecak dance is characterized by the chanting and dancing of 75 men while the performers re-enact some of the scenes from the epic tale. It is recommended to go there early at least an hour ahead to secure a good spot. You can purchase your ticket in advance too.

Admission Fee: IDR 30,000

Kecak dance Fee: IDR 100,000

Opening Hours: 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM; 24/7 for worshipers

Kecak dance Schedule: Starts at 6:00 PM daily

Location: Uluwatu Temple, Pecatu, South Kuta, Badung Regency, Bali

Lines can be too long. but you can book your ticket in advance through Klook. You can also join a tour which includes a Kecak dance ticket via Klook. The tour package includes roundtrip transfers (hotel pick up and drop off) and tour driver.

The town of Ubud is hemmed by dense forest and rice paddies. aside from being the cultural and art center of Bali, incorporating agriculture in tourism has become popular in the central region. Alas Harum is one of those places that promote agro-tourism. The place offers coffee experience — coffee testing and coffee store — and extreme activities.

The super extreme swing took my breath away! There are three types of swings: super extreme swing, super swing, and couple swing. other activities are flying fox and sky bike.
