EL NIDO PALAWAN travel guide with sample schedule & budget

Last updated: 9 MARCH 2020

Here’s our diy EL NIDO PALAWAN travel guide BLOG! In this post, you’ll find sample EL NIDO ITINERARIES, breakdown of expenses, and recommendations on hotels, resorts, tours, and things to do. hope this helps you plan your next Palawan trip!

When I was a child and conjured up an image of a tropical paradise in a daydream, this looked exactly like this world.

When our boat glided through the waves, it was as though we sailed into a karst world straight from a fantasy film. As we moved closer, the cliffs appeared to magically part, as if ushering us in, inviting us to come in and see what the island had to offer. As we moved, these splendid huge rocks slowly revealed white, sparkling beaches adorned with coconut trees. In this world, “ugly” is either banned or non-existent. (Then I thought, “Holy eff, what am I doing here?”)

“This is my Narnia,” I mumbled to myself, thinking that the numerous years I had spent in the closet finally paid off. I chuckled.

How I got here was a matter of fate. El Nido was nowhere under my radar at the time. I was under a foolish impression that only the dirty rich could afford it. but as I was simply browsing the web, I chanced upon a piso sale. I wasn’t enslaved by travel then. A full-time corporate job had the whip in a tight grip. but it was the ideal moment. A classic corporate-slave-meets-freedom moment. Every tension that work had brought me over the past few weeks was blown away by the wind, washed away by the waves of El Nido.

Back then, El Nido was a bit different. It wasn’t as crowded or as developed. I could walk down the length of the town’s main street without running into another tourist. Back then, it wasn’t easy to reach. There weren’t that numerous flights, and the ride from Puerto Princesa would eat up over seven hours on a half-unpaved road.

But as I stood in the middle of it, I knew this would be the first of my numerous affairs with El Nido. Over the next few years, El Nido would be my go-to place whenever I needed a little bit of uplifting, even despite not being easily accessible. I returned practically every year. That’s the thing about El Nido: it’s playing hard-to-get. but it’s the kind of destination you’d want to marry.

UNDERSTANDING EL NIDO

The municipality of El Nido encompasses the northernmost suggestion of the main island of Palawan and the 45 rocky islands dotting Bacuit Bay. A protected area, El Nido is a treasure trove of marine life and spectacular seascape, earning it a consistent place among the best beach destinations in the world.

Although a first-class municipality, El Nido remains a quiet town. The town proper is tiny, with very few big establishments other than small travel agencies, hotels, restaurants, and stores. The nearest city is Puerto Princesa, the capital of Palawan, which is five hours away.

Together with Coron and Puerto Princesa, El Nido is part of the popular tourism triumvirate in Palawan. These are the three many went to destinations in the province. El Nido sits in the middle, available from both Coron to its north and Puerto Princesa to its south.

My pals enjoying the beach, the sea, and the view!

WHERE TO stay IN EL NIDO

Best area to stay in El Nido

El Nido’s poblacion is composed of four barangays (villages): Buena Suerte, Corong-Corong, Maligaya, and Masagana. Together, they occupy two small peninsulas that jut out into Bacuit Bay.

What many people refer to as the “Town Proper” is actually the settlement parallel to the beach in Brgy. Buena Suerte. just next to it is Brgy. Masagana, best known for several much more resorts and Calaan Beach. Corong-corong lies on the southern cape, with its nooks and crannies filled with fine sand.

There are four main areas where you can stay:

Town proper (Buena Suerte). This is where many of the action is. Its streets are flanked with trip offices, small hotels, and restaurants. Of all these areas, it was the first to be developed. It also has a teensy bit of nightlife.

Corong-Corong. tucked in the southern beaches of the poblacion, it has that isolated tropical paradise feel. It’s the area nearest the bus terminal.

Calaan beach (Masagana). Resorts have also begun flourishing in the area, but just like Corong Corong, it doesn’t feel crowded either.

The Islands. Accommodations on the islands are mostly luxury resorts, which are completely expensive, so let’s pretend they don’t exist. LOL

If you’re in El Nido for some peace and quiet, stay in either Corong-Corong or Calaan. but if you just want convenience, the town proper is still the best choice.

Top budget Resorts & Hostels

My favorite place to stay in El Nido is spin designer HOSTEL. It’s clean and well-maintained, has friendly service, and an environment that is conducive to forging friendships with other travelers. because it’s in the town proper, practically everything I need is within easy reach.

Coincidentally, spin HOSTEL is one of the top-rated properties on Agoda, so I guess I’m not the only fan. here are the rest of the highest ranking budget accommodations as scored by online users. note that not all of these are in the areas we think are ideal, but they have the best scores among the budget-friendly properties.

HOW TO get TO EL NIDO

Manila to El Nido (Direct Flight)

AirSwift is the only airline that flies from Manila directly to Lio airport in El Nido. They operate up to four flights per day.

An off-peak one-way fare is at P5100 (including taxes, a meal in Manila, and welcome snacks El Nido). An additional P200 is collected for 10kg baggage allowance.

At the airport, you can travel by tricycle to the city center. travel time: 30 minutes. Fare: 200.

San Vicente airport to El Nido

Another way to access El Nido is through the newly opened San Vicente Airport, located in a neighboring town. Philippine Airlines flies daily from Clark to San Vicente. travel time is 1 hour 40 minutes.

At San Vicente Airport, you can ride a van to El Nido departing at 1pm. Fare is P400.

It will terminate at the station in El Nido. From there, you can take a tricycle to your hotel or resort. Fare is P50.

Puerto Princesa airport to El Nido

If Airswift’s rates are a bit taller than your budget, you can fly to Puerto Princesa instead. then travel by land from there.

Puerto Princesa (PPS) has an international airport that is now much bigger and much more equipped. Flights to PPS are typically less expensive than direct flights to El Nido. and they can go incredibly low during seat sales. AirAsia and Cebu Pacific Air offer the lowest fares but the published rates don’t include baggage allowance, seat selection, and meals. Philippine Airlines’ have all these add-ons included in their published rates.

To reach El Nido from Puerto Princesa international Airport, you have two options: by van and by bus.

By Van

This is probably the most popular option among tourists because it’s slightly faster. If you book in advance, the van can pick you up at the airport and take you straight to El Nido in 5-6 hours.

Klook provides two transfer services: regular and DayTripper.

Regular Van
Multiple trips are available from 5:30am to 8:30pm.
Fare: P500.
✅ RESERVE A SEAT HERE!

DayTripper Van
DayTripper is a respectable travel agency in Palawan. Their vans are slightly much more comfortable with bigger legroom and headroom. They are also known for their outstanding service (with seatbelts!), and they only need 5 passengers to go. There is only one DayTripper van available on Klook, scheduled to leave at 10am as of this writing. (Double check the time before you book because this might change.)
Fare: P850.
✅ RESERVE A SEAT HERE!

If for whatever reason you can’t book with Klook, here are the companies providing this service:

Eulen delight Express
Contact No.: +63 915 829 3735
Facebook page

Lexxuss Shuttle
Contact No.: +63 917 686 1118
Facebook page

Fort Wally travel & Tours
Contact No.: +63 917 276 2875
Facebook page

Travel time is typically 5-6 hours. based on experience, these vans are fast. That’s both a good thing and a bad thing. I in some cases find myself saying a silent prayer in the middle of the journey. and I’m not even religious!

Regular fare is typically between P550 and P600. However, Fort Wally in some cases brings the cost down to P450 when they have a promo. Locals typically get a discount.

Some of these vans don’t leave until they’re full. but it doesn’t take that long these days.

All van journeys stop halfway for a quick restroom and snack break.

बसबाट

The bus is another option. It’s my preferred option, actually. Buses are much more comfortable now than before, much more comfortable than the vans (at least in my opinion). larger legroom, cooler temperature, and just bigger breathing space overall. हाहा। The downside: it’s slower, taking 6-7 hours. and there are fewer journeys per day. but if you’re not in a big hurry, it’s a terrific option.

Here’s how to take the bus to El Nido.

Walk to the gate of the airport.

Hail a tricycle and ask to be taken to San Jose Terminal. Fare is P120 per ride. Split the cost if you’re a group. Alternatively, you can take a trike+jeepney combo, which is cheaper. but because I’m guessing you have heavy bags in tow, just go straight to the San Jose Terminal.

Board a bus to El Nido.

Two bus companies to choose from: RoRo Bus and Cherry Bus.

RoRo Bus
Ordinary: P290
Airconditioned: P380
Operating hours: 5am-9pm
Frequency: Every 2 hours

Cherry Bus
Ordinary: P385
Airconditioned: P480
Operating hours: 4am-10pm
Frequency: Every 2 hours

Both buses will make several stops along the way to pick up much more passengers, the longest will be in Roxas.

The bus will terminate at the station in El Nido. From there, you can take a tricycle to your hotel or resort. Fare is P50.

Coron to El Nido

Montenegro Fastcraft launched in September 2016 a new Coron-El Nido (and vice versa) route, which cuts the travel time to only 4 hours. schedule and rates below.

EL NIDO TOURS

One terrific thing about El Nido is that many essential attractions, especially the islands and beaches, are grouped into trip packages. The trips are also regulated and standardized. Boatmen and travel agencies should abide by the guidelines and guidelines that they set in purchase to offer a smoother and much more consistent service to tourists. A price ceiling is in effect, which implies trip operators cannot sell trips at rates higher than what has been set by the government.

The two many went to spots in El Nido are the small Lagoon and big Lagoon of Miniloc Island, both used to be part of trip A, which covers Miniloc Island. For the longest time, trip A was the most popular island tour, attracting much more tourists than all the other three by a mile. In effect, these sites are prone to overcrowding. To address the problem, in November 2018, the local government split the two apart and reassigned small Lagoon to trip D.

If you’re alone or a small group, you will be merged with other smaller groups to fill a boat. If you want a private boat, you can charter one too.

These guidelines apply:

You can check out only one premium spot per day. premium spots are: big Lagoon (Tour A), small Lagoon (Tour D), and secret beach (Tour C). You can’t check out big Lagoon and secret Lagoon on the same day. You can’t check out secret beach and small Lagoon on the same day, either. combination trips are now prohibited.

Pre-registration is required for visitors going to small Lagoon, big Lagoon, or secret Beach. This allows the government to monitor and manage the volume of tourists. To register, just give your name and contact details to the trip operator when you b

Understanding discounts as well as Piso Fare Sales

Airline discounts are legit. They’re not trying to deceive you when they reveal a sale however you can’t discover any type of discount seats. The issue is, it’s getting tougher as well as tougher to snag them since countless people are gunning for a restricted number of seats.

If you’ve been trying to score Cebu Pacific discount fares however always stop working to pin down any, it’s time to sit down as well as inspect if you’re doing it right. right here are some tips!

While AirAsia is commonly credited for revolutionizing air travel in mainland Southeast Asia, in the Philippines, that honor has always been held by Cebu Pacific Air.

For the longest time, the phrase affordable provider had been synonymous with Cebu Pacific. They may have even coined the term “piso fare,” any type of mention of which is sure to get any type of budget plan traveler excited. For years, Cebu Pacific has brought flying better to a lot more Filipinos. We understand this since our blog, in its early years, was powered mainly by these piso fares!

In fact, we flew Cebu Pacific on our extremely very first trip as bloggers. We were able to snag a roundtrip ticket from one of their seat sales. Back then, there weren’t that lots of extra fees. discount tickets back then expense no a lot more than P100. Today, Cebu Pacific continues their custom of making air travel a lot more affordable. Although I often discover their year-round fares pricier than other airlines’, what I like about CEB is that when they state they’re providing away huge discounts, they indicate it. They don’t slash just a few hundred pesos as well as phone call it a large sale for PR. When they do it, they do it with a BANG.

If you’ve been trying to score Cebu Pacific discount fares however always stop working to pin down any, it’s time to sit down as well as inspect if you’re doing it right. however first, comprehend exactly how these sales work.

Only a restricted number of seats are put on sale. The number of seats on a airplane is not infinite. as well as as much as we would like for airlines to put all of them on sale, it’s just not gonna occur since they requirement to make a revenue too! If you’re a huge group as well as you want to be on the exact same flight, great luck with that.

Published rates commonly refer to BASE FARES only. Base fares are the costs of the seat, minus all the government taxes, terminal fees, as well as other surcharges. Base fares are the greatest chunk of the cost that are really within the airline’s control. When Cebu Pacific states PISO FARE, what they indicate is that the base fare is only P1. add all the taxes as well as other fees, as well as that’s the overall amount that you requirement to clear up to total your booking.

You requirement to be early. It’s very first come, very first served. even when the selling period lasts a number of days, don’t expect to see discount fares on the last few days. possibilities are, others may have already booked those valuable seats method before you. The great news is, Cebu Pacific now makes offered OUT announcements.

You requirement to be fast. Each client is provided only a restricted time to book per session. The certain seat you’re eyeing may be gone in a matter of minutes (or seconds).

Be the very first to understand about Seat Sales

The very first step to grabbing a discount fare is understanding when the sale is going to be.

Like Cebu Pacific Air on Facebook. Seat sales are normally revealed on Facebook first.

Like THE bad TRAVELER on Facebook. Yep! We always reveal major seat sales as well as discounts not just by Cebu Pacific however other airlines as well. If you truly want to make sure you don’t miss the sale, prioritize our articles on your news Feed. To do that, just see The bad Traveler FB page, hover on the complying with button. On the listing of choices that will be revealed, select SEE FIRST.

Things to Prepare before the Sale

Booking a discount fare is like going to war. Haha. countless hungry bargain-hunters will be battling for a extremely restricted number of seats. Prepare for battle!

A fast, trustworthy Web connection. The quicker the connection, the better. Airline’s web sites sluggish down during sale since of the sheer number of people as well as having a sucky connection would make matters worse. Fortunately, Cebu Pacific’s web site has improved dramatically over the past few years. It’s really much much easier to book now as well as you can see several dates at once, unlike before. even at height moments, downtimes seldom happen.

A Cebu Pacific Air/GETGO account. GetGo is Cebu Pacific’s loyalty/rewards program, as well as being a member has its own perks. If you have a GetGo account, you won’t requirement to type your personal as well as credit score card details when booking a flight. Time is extremely crucial during a seat sale. having an account will save you time as well as effort. Some sales are likewise special to GetGo members; some provide them early gain access to or early notification.

Your travel details. Your target destination, travel dates, as well as favored time.

Your plan B details. In situation your very first option isn’t offered anymore, having an alternate destination or date prepared will make the process go a lot more smoothly. It will assist to inspect the number of discount seats available. The listing is normally published on the discount page of the web site hours before the actual sale. This will assist you see which routes have a lot more discounted seats, for this reason a lot more possibilities of getting discount tickets.

Your companion’s personal details. These include their full name as well as birth date. Usually, passport number isn’t a needed field. You may likewise ask your buddy their seat (aisle or window) as well as meal preferences beforehand.

Lots of patience. Booking discount flights isn’t easy. It takes a great deal of patience as well as determination, hahaha. When the site accidents or your connection fumbles, don’t provide up easily. just keep your game deal with on!

How to book with Cebu Pacific

Choose your origin, destination, travel dates, as well as number of travelers. book by little batches. This is one thing I have proven so lots of times. SUNKEN CEMETERY in Camiguin

faith is not something we always see in tropical island destinations. The island of Camiguin, however, is different. After all, in a land where seven volcanoes lie, faith goes a long way. The faith and devotion of the people of Camiguin is obvious in numerous of its many popular attractions such as those in Catarman — the walkway to the Old Volcano and the Sunken Cemetery.

Seated conveniently in the multi-cab that we hired for the day, I moved closer to the window to let the wind blow my hair dry. coming from Ardent hot Springs and Katibawasan Falls in the capital Mambajao, we were now headed for Catarman. but the wind was not the only thing enjoyable about this trip. The road to Catarman offered spectacular view of Camiguin’s coastline.

Camiguin’s coconutty coastline
From the road we could see the island’s rocky shores where coconut trees lined up and swayed like huge arms waving to us. Although at times I felt the drive was a little harmful as we drove on the edges of the cliffs, none of it mattered the moment we caught a peek of the beautiful landscape.

The walkway to the Old Volcano (Mt. Vulcan)

The slope of mount Vulcan gets filled with prayers especially during holy Week when the Panaad festival happens. Devotees and tourists alike climb a series of steps which eventually becomes a mildly challenging hike. Along the way are statues depicting the 14 stations of the Cross. These figures are about life-size and painted white, very easy to spot. Although the start of the trail was under the canopy of trees skirting the walk way, there were parts where they disappeared and we had to face the heat of the sun. It got tiring as we went on but the view from the top was simply breathtaking and was worth every step.

Start hiking to the top! It was easy at this point…
The first station: Jesus is condemned to death.
I honestly do not remember which station this belongs to…
The Sunken Cemetery

Mount Vulcan has erupted so numerous times before. also known as the Old Volcano, Mt. Vulcan erupted in 1827 and 1862, which claimed hundreds of lives. In 1871, it had another eruption, this time causing the island’s old capital (during the Spanish era) sink underwater. one of the places that got soaked was the old community cemetery, which still emerged when the tide was low in the years following the disaster.

But the story doesn’t end there yet.

The cross that marks the spot where the cemetery used to be
In 1948 and 1953, the old volcano demonstrated its immense power again, sinking the cemetery deeper under the sea. Today, it lies 20 feet below the surface. Corals has grown on and around tombstones and marine life has flourished, making it a distinct and remarkable diving destination. marking the spot is a huge cross built on hardened lava in 1982.

1. Pre-register and fill out the pal passenger profile and health declaration form (PPHD).

You should do this as early as 5 DAYS before departure.

You must first accomplish the pre-registration form here: https://bit.ly/PALIntPPHD. This is step one of the 2-step registration process for passengers departing from the Philippines.

After submitting this form, you will be sent the following via email:

a list of requirements of your destination

a unique reference code

the pal passenger profile and health declaration form (PPHD form)

Save or print the unique reference code that will be sent to you. You might need to use it later on so don’t forget this step.

2. complete the requirements.

The requirements below are applicable for all outbound Filipino travelers except OFWs and students enrolled abroad or exchange program participants.

Valid Philippine passport

Confirmed roundtrip tickets

Travel and health insurance

Accomplished pal passenger profile and health declaration form (PPHD Form). You can find it here.

Signed Bureau of immigration declaration Form. available upon check-in and on pal website.

In addition, some countries may have additional requirements such as:

Valid visa (if applicable)

Travel and health documents (if required by destination country)

Negative COVID-19 test result (if required by destination country)

Note that these are just the requirements for leaving the Philippines. Your destination country most probably has additional ARRIVAL rules and restrictions that you must follow. These entry requirements vary per country. For example, some countries may require a negative COVID-19 test result prior to departure but some don’t.

If you’re flying with PAL, you may check the requirements here! on that page, scroll down to the bottom and you’ll find a menu. Click those that apply to you and they’ll reveal a list of requirements per destination and passenger classification.

It is also important to note that NOT ALL countries accept travelers from the Philippines. It’s best to contact the authorities in your destination directly to make sure and get their updated policies.

3. undergo a COVID-19 testing, if required by your destination country.

You can get discounted rates and quicker release of results with PAL’s accredited testing partners. You can find the list here: PAL-accredited testing partners!

4. On departure date, proceed to the airport.

Arrive at the airport at least 4 hours before the scheduled time of departure or before 8PM latest.

The extra time is due to the additional protocol for COVID-19 done at the airport.

In addition, the government also requires airport passengers to download the TRAZE app, a contact-tracing mobile application. more info about that here: how TO use TRAZE APP!

5. follow safety procedures at all times.

Wear a face mask and a face shield at all times inside the airport and during the flight. The face shield must be of clear and sturdy and must cover the entire face.

Have your temperature checked at designated spots.

Use foot baths and disinfection facilities at designated stations.

Observe physical distancing at all times. minimum contact must be ensured during all procedures from check-in, boarding, in-flight, disembarking, to retrieving of check-in baggage.

6. check in and clear immigration and security checks.

Check in to your flight as usual. The check-in staff will check your requirements.

If you don’t have an immigration declaration form yet, you may get one from the check-in counters too.

CLARK airport GUIDE: how to get There, What to Do before flight

It’s not always that I fly out of Diosdado Macapagal international Airport, much more popularly known as Clark airport (CRK). Living in Metro Manila, I still choose flights that take off and land at Ninoy Aquino international airport (NAIA) because it is certainly much more convenient to me. The air traffic congestion problem in Manila, however, pushed numerous airlines (PAL Express, Cebu Pacific Air, AirAsia, and more) to fly to and from Clark, making this central Luzon gateway probably the fastest growing airport in the country.

HOW TO get TO CLARK AIRPORT

Clark airport is located two to three hours from Manila, depending on which part of the city you’re coming from. If you’re not very lucky, traffic can make the travel time even longer. Thus, to be on the safe side, I typically leave Manila six hours before my flight schedule — that gives me a four-hour allowance on the road and two hours to get through all the airport processes.

For example, if my flight is scheduled at 12 noon, I am already at the bus terminal at around 6am. I know that may be too much time but you know what they say, better safe than sorry. After all, it gives me ample time to come up with a plan B ought to something unfortunate happen like the bus breaking down at the expressway or something.

Here are the timetables. We also added the schedule of P2P buses from SUBIC and DAGUPAN.

What To Do before an international flight at Clark

If you’ve flown to a foreign destination before from NAIA, then you won’t have any problem going through the check-in process at Clark. It’s practically exactly the same. If anything, it’s much simpler because the counters lie close to one another.

Check in! present your passport to the check-in agent and drop your bags for check in. The agent will give you your boarding pass.

Pay the travel tax and terminal fee. travel tax is P1,620 per person for economy class. terminal fee is P600 per person. They will give you a receipt.

Get a departure Card. accomplish one copy per person. You will need the exact address of your hotel here.

Proceed to immigration counters. Line up and clear immigration check.

Final safety and security check. Remove all gadgets and metal items (including belts and coins) from your body. remove your shoes, too.

After the final safety and security check, head to the Pre-Departure Area. check your boarding pass to see what gate you ought to go to. All you need to do now is wait for the boarding call.

Oh by the way, there is a foreign exchange (FOREX) Counter at the Check-in Hall. If you want to exchange currencies before your flight, do so before approaching the immigration Booth. (There’s no turning back once you made it through. count on me; I tried. Haha.)

There you have it! सुभ यात्रा!

Things to Bring

Like I said on this post, I always have a checklist of items I should NOT forget when I travel abroad. यहाँ छ:

Passport – Do not ever, ever forget your passport.

Printed flight Itinerary/Tickets – Make sure you print out the tickets. When I fly domestic, I typically just show the check-in agent the tickets on my phone. They accept it. but for international flights, you will be showing your tickets too numerous times (check-in counter, travel tax counter, departure fee counter, immigration, etc) that it would be impractical and ridiculously bothersome to whip out your phone every step of the way. A printed ticket will make it a lot simpler for you and the people who will check it. Besides, a piece of paper does not need to be charged.

Valid IDs – Not really that essential because the passport is considered a valid ID. but to be safe, I always bring other IDs, just in case I was invited by immigration Officers for a short “talk.”

DSWD Clearance – only when I’m traveling with my nephew or niece and their parents are not joining the trip.

Credit card – Some airlines require a copy of the credit report card used when the tickets are booked online. You might also need it as a safety net in case you run short of cash. Some hotels also ask for credit report card for deposit.

Travel Itinerary – Make a clear plan of what you want

HO CHI MINH CITY travel Guide: Budget, Itinerary, things to Do

Here’s our newest diy SAIGON travel guide blog that can help you plan your next trip to HO CHI MINH CITY, VIETNAM. We covered vital travel information in this post including top traveler spots, things to do, trip recommendations, and list of possible trip expenses. hope this helps!

The first city I went to in Vietnam was Hanoi. and despite some misgivings and warnings from fellow travelers, I found the capital to be surprisingly charming. It wasn’t love at first sight, that’s for sure. but Hanoi warmed up to me, slowly but surely.

Hence, I was really thrilled to return to Vietnam. this time around, my base would be Ho Chi Minh City. For some reason, I was counting on the idea that it would be very similar to Hanoi. but they [turned out to be] two sides of the same coin.

Ho Chi Minh City: vital travel Information

In numerous ways, Ho Chi Minh City is similar to Hanoi. Its map is dotted with museums. Its curbsides are lined with small restaurants serving delicious local eats! Its streets are ruled by motorbikes, 7.3 million of them! While conventional heritage is strong, the so-called French flair is undeniable, primarily because it was a colony of France from 1859 to 1955.

Ho Chi Minh City, still typically referred to as Saigon and typically abbreviated as HCMC, is the largest and economic center of Vietnam. It is also the most populous and the most visited, served by the country’s busiest airport. It is a bustling metropolis. It has all the essential signs of a big city in a developing world: noise, crowd, chaos, pollution, and an energy that can’t be contained. Life here seems to relocation at a much faster pace. Nightlife is alive, feeding an already brewing youth culture. It kinda reminded me much more of Manila than Hanoi, to be honest.

Saigon was the center of the capitalist South Vietnam which fought the communist North during the Vietnam War. The South was assisted by the united states primarily, while the North by the Soviet Union. The South was defeated after the fall of Saigon or Liberation of Saigon (depending on who you ask) on April 30, 1975, putting an end to the war. Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City, in honor of the revolutionary leader of the Việt Minh independence movement.

Other info you need to know:

Language: Vietnamese. In writing, the Latin or Roman script is used with additional diacritics for tones. English is understood and spoken in many touristy places. Taxi and get chauffeurs speak limited English, so it’s advisable to have the address of your destination written down to avoid confusion. many street vendors speak or understand very little English or none at all.

Currency: Vietnamese đồng (VND, ₫). VND 100,000 is around USD 4.27, EUR 3.76, SGD5.78, PHP 230 (as of August 2018). However, it is not uncommon for hotel and trip operators to use us dollars.

Modes of payment: cash is still king in Ho Chi Minh City. Upscale establishments accept credit report cards, but pay only cash at small stores and eateries.

Electricity Info: 220V, 50Hz. many common sockets are sort of a combination of types A and C. They have two holes that can accept both flat and round pins, the shape of two door knobs or rubber stamps facing each other. This type of socket can take plugs that are types A, C, and F. If your plug has three pins, you will be needing an adaptor.

When is the best Time to check out Ho Chi Minh City?

The best time to check out Ho Chi Minh City is December to March.

Graph courtesy of world Bank
Ho Chi Minh City enjoys a tropical climate with only two seasons: wet season, from may to October, and dry season, from November to April. However, April and may are the hottest months with temperatures in some cases reaching 39C. December is the coldest, dipping to just above 16C in early morning.

Where to stay in Ho Chi Minh City

If Hanoi has the Old Quarter, Saigon has district 1, where Ben Thanh Market and Pam Lu Ngao street are located. Pam Lu Ngao to Saigon is what Khao San is to Bangkok. It’s where many backpackers stay because of high concentration of hostels, dormitories, and budget hotels. low-cost restaurants and souvenir shops also abound.

Accessibility is also a major draw. Buses to and from the airport and other destinations in Vietnam and Cambodia also make a stop here. The airport shuttle terminates here. and when we traveled from Siem Reap, the bus also dropped us off here, which was terrific because our hotel was just around the corner.

Top budget hotels in Saigon

The price of a double or twin room in district 1 is typically between ₫400,000 and ₫2,000,000. If your budget is limited, here are the top budget hotels as scored by Agoda users!

How to get to Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City is served by Tân Sơn Nhất international airport (IATA: SGN), Vietnam’s busiest airport. It’s developed to accommodate 25 million passengers, but in 2016, record hit over 32 million, so expect some congestion if this is your gateway to the city.

Part of the reason why Ho Chi Minh City is popular among tourists is its proximity to other destinations not just in Vietnam but also Cambodia, making it a compelling entry point for those planning a multi-city or multi-country backpacking tour. From Ho Chi Minh, you can easily reach Mui Ne and Da Lat, and even Phnom Penh in Cambodia.

Manila to Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City is only 2 hours 40 minutes from Manila by plane. The lowest year-round fares are provided by AirAsia and Cebu Pacific. You can get one-way fares for as low as P2500 (base fare only, no baggage allowance). It can still go lower when there’s PISO SALE or other enormous promos. I’m always tempted to book flights to Saigon because it’s easy to find promotion fares. It typically has a lot of available seats on sale.

Scoot also provides very competitive fares, with a stopover in Singapore. Philippine Airlines and Vietnam Airlines also operate direct Manila-HCMC flights.

Here’s a sample Traveloka search.

Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City

You can travel from Phnom Penh to Saigon by bus, by van, or by plane.

By Plane. travel time is 55 minutes. Fares range from USD80 to USD200, the most affordable provided by Cambodia Angkor Air and Vietnam Airlines.

बसबाट। travel time: 6-8 hours. Fare: USD 13.55 to USD 16. popular bus companies are typically Mekong express and Kumho Sanco. Overnight buses are also available. If you want to catch some sleep on the road, book a sleeper bus. Reserve BUS Ticket Here.

By Van. travel time: 7 hours. Fare: USD 19. Reserve VAN Ticket Here.

If you’re taking the bus or the van, you’ll have to get off at the Bavet-Moc Bai border to pass through Immigration.

Siem Reap to Ho Chi Minh City

The easiest way to travel from Siem Reap to Saigon is by plane. but it is also possible to do it by land. I’ve done this before, by bus, although it is an experience I do not wish to repeat. Haha.

We may have just have been unlucky and chanced upon a bad bus, but it was terrible. We booked an overnight bus through a travel agency in Siem Reap. even though all the windows were closed, the dust was able to seep into the car so we couldn’t breathe or sleep properly. When we switched buses in Phnom Penh, our bags, clothes, and skin were all covered in a thick layer of dirt. So yeah, fly when you can.

Anyway, here are your options.

By plane. The most affordable flights are operated by Cambodia Angkor Air and Vietnam Airlines. travel time: 1 hour 15 minutes. You can find fares for as low as USD76 or PHP4000.

बसबाट। Overnight sleeper buses are operated by Virak Buntham Express. travel time: around 15 hours. Mekong express has shorter travel time, 12 hours, but it leaves Siem Reap 7:30am and reaches Saigon at 7:30pm. check rates or Reserve Here.
